Sheffield United vs Southampton Predictions

Southampton have been on a shocking run of form in the Premier League, but I believe they possess enough quality to damage what will be a highly depleted Sheffield United defence.

  • Sheffield United have lost 4 of their last 5 matches (Premier League).
  • Sheffield United have lost 21 of their 27 matches this season (Premier League).
  • Southampton have won their last 3 matches against Sheffield United (all competitions).

Head to Head

Sheffield United hold a 25-19 head-to-head advantage over Southampton, with the two sides drawing 13 of their 57 competitive meetings.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton side won 3-0 when the two sides met in December, courtesy of goals from Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond.

Sheffield United Form

Despite looking destined for relegation, Chris Wilder’s side shocked Aston Villa 1-0 earlier this week, despite playing a third of the match with ten men.

David McGoldrick's 30th minute goal was the difference with the Blades hanging on despite Phil Jagielka being sent off just before the hour mark.

The Blades had lost four in a row in the Premier League prior to the win over Villa, and are still 12 points from safety despite the victory.

Wilder's side are struggling for goals and have a major defensive crisis with suspended Jagielka joining a list of absentees.

Sheffield United Injuries & Team News

Following Phil Jagielka’s red card against Aston Villa, Wilder’s side are missing six central defensive options as Chris Basham, John Egan, Jack O’Connell, Jack Robinson and Jack Rodwell are all out injured.

The Blades are also missing midfielder Sander Berge and defender Jayden Bogle, so it is likely their bench will be highly inexperienced.

Southampton Form

Southampton were sixth after they last won a game in the Premier League, but nine matches later they are still waiting for another victory.

The Saints have found themselves potentially dragged into a relegation battle after the latest loss to Everton in a 1-0 defeat on Monday.

The dip in form of Danny Ings has been integral to their downfall with Southampton failing to score in defeats to Leeds (3-0) and Everton.

Southampton Injuries & Team News

Ralph Hasenhüttl will be missing two starters in forward Theo Walcott and midfielder Oriel Romeu, with midfielder Will Smallbone and striker Michael Obafemi also ruled out.

Full-back Kyle Walker-Peters and midfielders Ibrahima Diallo, Takumi Minamino and Moussa Djenepo are all doubtful.

Having so many central defenders missing will hurt Sheffield United, especially against two quality strikers in Danny Ings and Che Adams.
Southampton possess the pace to hurt Sheffield United and they will not get a better opportunity to end their winless run this season.
