Feyenoord vs Sparta Rotterdam Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips


Feyenoord and Sparta contest a Rotterdam derby in the first weekend of the 2019-20 Eredivisie season. Feyenoord have bossed their neighbours in recent years, but this is a great chance for Sparta to upset the odds and keep it closer than bookmakers suggest.

Feyenoord finished third in the Eredivisie last season, 21 points behind winners Ajax which shows how far they have slipped since their title win in 2016-17. Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst guided the club to their first Eredivisie title in 18 years, but he stepped aside after four years in charge with Jaap Stam taking over.

The former Manchester United defender had two disappointing spells in charge of Reading and PEC Zwolle, but Stam has a chance to resurrect his career in Rotterdam. Pre season started well with three straight wins before losing three of their last four against strong opposition. 

Robin van Persie has retired and central midfielder Tonny Vilhena was sold to Krasnodar. Incoming players have arrived on free transfers including central midfielder Leroy Fer and attacking midfielders Liam Kelly and Luciano Narsingh. Fer is likely to be a key player in the middle of the park.

Feyenoord have to figure out how to replace Robin van Persie’s goals. With Danish striker Nicolai Jörgensen nowhere to be seen, 20-year-old Dylan Vente gets his chance but much of the responsibility will fall on Steven Berghuis.

Berghuis contributed 12 goals and 12 assists in the Eredivisie this season. The former AZ Alkmaar and Watford winger scored 18 goals the season before and will be a popular pick in the first and anytime goalscorer markets.

Feyenoord Rotterdam are short priced favourites at 1.25 with a -1 handicap paying 1.62. I’m not willing to push it out to a -2 handicap which can be backed at 2.50.

Sparta Rotterdam Form & Team News 


Sparta Rotterdam are back in the Eredivisie after a season in the Eerste Divisie. Sparta beat De Graafschap in the playoffs with manager Henk Fraser guiding the club back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Sparta face a tough start to the 2019-20 season with an away match at local rivals Feyenoord where they have lost their last nine matches. They come into the match with confidence however after winning five of their six pre-season matches including a 3-0 win at Eredivisie club Willem II.

Sparta held onto top scorers Lars Veldwijk, Mohamed Rayhi and 19-year-old Halil Dervisoglu. No significant players have left with goalkeeper Ariel Harush, centre-back Jurgen Mattheij and attacking midfidler Bryan Smeets coming in to strengthen the squad. 

Sparta Rotterdam are big outsiders at 12.00 to beat Feyenoord with a draw paying 7.00. You can back Sparta at 2.20 in the +2 handicap market.

Feyenoord have a 69-22 advantage over Sparta with 23 draws. They have won four of the last five, scoring 19 goals and conceding three in that span.

The last Eredivisie meeting was in the in the 2017-18 season Feyenoord winning 7-0 at Het Kasteel and a 3-1 win at De Kuip with Steven Berghuis bagging a brace.

Feyenoord will be relying heavily on wingers Sam Larsson and Steven Berghuis. Robin van Persie’s retirement leaves a big hole in the goalscoring department which could be a problem for Jaap Stam’s side.

Sparta Rotterdam’s Lars Veldwijk, Mohamed Rayhi and Halil Dervisoglu combined to score 47 goals in the Eerste Divisie last season. If they can recapture that form in the Eredivisie a shock is possible in Rotterdam.

Verdict

Feyenoord have won their last nine home games against Sparta Rotterdam. That’s a large reason they are short priced favourites but I am opposing the hosts who have been poor in pre-season.

Sparta Rotterdam can pull off a shock here. A draw is paying big odds but the safer option is taking Sparta in the handicap markets.
