Chelsea vs Manchester City Preview & Betting Tips

Chelsea and Manchester City will face each other in the 2018 FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium. This will be the first taste of action in England for new Blues manager Maurizio Sarri while Pep Guardiola will be looking to lay down a marker for the new season.

The Blues were beaten on penalties by London rivals Arsenal in their final pre-season fixture on Wednesday. They held the Gunners to a 1-1 draw in regulation time with defender Antonio Rudiger getting their only goal.

The London club were disappointing last season as they finished outside the top four. Manager Antonio Conte paid the price for Chelsea’s poor campaign and was replaced by former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri.

The 59-year-old will be without the likes of Eden Hazard, N’golo Kante and Thibaut Courtois all of whom are yet to return after playing at the World Cup. However, Willian has rejoined the team ahead of the clash while Alvaro Morata, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Victor Moses and new signing Jorginho could also feature.

The reigning Premier League Champions are coming off the back of a 3-2 win over Bundesliga club Bayern Munich in their final warm-up match. After defeats to Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, goals from Bernardo Silva and Lukas Nmecha ensured they ended their pre-season campaign with a win.

The Citizens were dominant in the league last season as they romped to a record-breaking title win. Manager Pep Guardiola has the difficult task of repeating last year’s feat and the 47-year-old will hope to make a statement in Sunday’s clash.

New signing Riyad Mahrez has been passed fit after an injury scare last week and could feature on Sunday. The likes of Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Aymeric Laporte are also in contention to play.

Manchester City have edged the recent encounters between both teams with four wins in the last five matches. They also defeated Chelsea home and away in their two meetings in the league last season.

City claimed a 1-0 victory the last time both teams faced each other with Bernardo Silva netting the only goal of the match.

Chelsea are expected to have a different philosophy under Sarri, who is renowned for favouring an attacking style of play. The likes of Pedro and Willian will feature prominently while Morata will hope to rediscover his scoring touch.

However, their progressive system could play into the hands of City, especially in the wide areas with Sane and Mahrez.

The Blues could be left exposed by the pace of both men while Aguero will carry the attacking threat in the central position.

Key Statistics

  • Chelsea have lost 5 of their last 7 matches against Manchester City (All Competitions).

  • Manchester City have seen over 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 10 matches (All Competitions).
  • Both teams have seen over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 7 meetings (All Competitions).

Manchester City have the edge in recent meetings with Chelsea and should be favourites to claim the win. However, with both teams favouring an attacking style of play, there is likely to be goals in this one.
