Head-to-Head

Sunderland and Newcastle have won 53 matches each and drawn 49 in 155 previous meetings.

Sunderland Form

New Sunderland boss Michael Beale recovered from a 3-0 home loss to Coventry in December. The new Black Cats manager has since led his side to a three-match unbeaten run.

Sunderland beat Hull (1-0) and Preston (2-0) either side of a 1-1 draw at Rotherham in the festive period.

Alex Pritchard scored after 10 minutes in the win over Preston on New Year’s Day. Sunderland had 7-12 shots and Nazariy Rusyn netted a second just before half time.

Sunderland Injuries & Team News

Winger Patrick Roberts is doubtful.

Defenders Niall Huggins and Dennis Cirkin are out.

Midfielders Bradley Dack and Jay Matete are also out.

Newcastle Form

Newcastle’s recent form has tailed off significantly and the Magpies have lost seven of their last eight matches.

Eddie Howe’s side are on a four-match losing streak in all competitions. An EFL Cup penalties loss to Chelsea was followed by defeats to Luton (1-0), Nottingham Forest (3-1) and Liverpool (4-2).

Newcastle were dominated at Anfield with just 0.91-6.67 expected goals. Alexander Isak and Sven Botman’s goals weren’t enough to prevent the heavy defeat.

Newcastle Injuries & Team News

Midfielder Sandro Tonali is suspended.

Forwards Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes are ruled out.

Defenders Elliot Anderson, Javi Manquillo and Matt Targett are also out.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope and midfield duo Joe Willock and Jacob Murphy are unavailable due to injury.

Verdict

Sunderland and Newcastle will likely play to the occasion in this fierce derby clash. Both sides score goals and a high-scoring Tyne-Wear FA Cup grudge match is anticipated.
