Wolves vs Southampton Predictions

Southampton’s last win away to Wolves was back in March 2007 when they hammered the hosts 6-0 in their Championship fixture. A lot has changed since then and Wolves are the favourites going into this one.

The Saints have lost their last four games and are tipped for another defeat.

  • Wolves are undefeated in 4 of their last 5 matches (all competitions).
  • Wolves have conceded just 2 goals in their last 5 games (all competitions).
  • Wolves are undefeated in their last 5 home matches against Southampton (all competitions).
  • Wolves' Pedro Neto has scored in his last 2 games against Southampton (Premier League).
  • Southampton have lost their last 4 matches (Premier League).
  • Southampton have conceded 16 goals in their last 4 matches (Premier League).

Head to Head

Overall, the clubs have met 68 times with Southampton winning 27 times and Wolves winning 23 of the games. There have been 18 draws.

Wolves and Southampton drew 1-1 at Molineux in their Premier League clash earlier this season. Theo Walcott gave Southampton the lead but Pedro Neto equalised for Wolves late in the game.

Wolves Form

After a tough start to 2021, losing two of their first three games of the year, Wolves have now lost just once in their last five matches in all competitions.

Wolves have won two of those five games. They beat Chorley 1-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup and recorded an impressive 2-1 victory at home to Arsenal in the Premier League.

Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho were the goalscorers for Nuno Espírito Santo’s Wolves when they beat the Gunners.

Last weekend, Wolves drew 0-0 at home to Leicester. They have missed the goals of Raúl Jiménez following the Mexico international striker’s head injury in November.

Wolves Team News

Wolves are without five players for this game due to injury.

Defenders Willy Boly, Fernando Marçal and Rayan Aït-Nouri are out along with forwards Raul Jimenez and Daniel Podence.

Last weekend, Jonny Castro Otto returned to the starting line-up for the first time since August. He played 45 minutes on his return from an ACL injury.

Southampton Form

Southampton have lost four consecutive games for the first time since November 2019. Strangely, both of those runs included 9-0 losses in the Premier League.

In 2019, it was Leicester City who beat Ralph Hasenhϋttl’s side by that scoreline at St Mary’s. This time, it was a 9-0 loss for the Saints against Manchester United at Old Trafford just last week.

Southampton have scored three goals in their last four fixtures but conceded 16 over the same period.

On Saturday, Southampton lost 3-2 away to Newcastle. One positive from that game was a debut goal for Takumi Minamino who joined on loan from Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

Southampton Team News

Southampton also have some injury concerns going into Thursday’s game.

They will have to make-do without midfielders Ibrahima Diallo and Will Smallbone and forwards Theo Walcott and Michael Obafemi.

Full-back Kyle Walker-Peters and midfielder Stuart Armstrong will face late fitness tests.

Midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz is suspended and Takumi Minamino is cup-tied having played for Liverpool earlier in the competition.

Wolves have enjoyed a slight improvement in recent weeks and may have turned a corner. With Southampton’s dire run of form, it’s hard to see anything other than a Wolves victory in this one.

Pedro Neto has scored in his last two games against the Saints so he is a solid choice in the goalscorer markets.
