Adelaide United vs Western Sydney Wanderers Preview

A-League rivals Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers square off in a tough to predict quarter-final. Wanderers dominated the Reds last season and I'm backing them again.

Head To Head

The Wanderers won all three of their meetings with Adelaide last season, while they've only lost twice to the Reds since 2019.

Adelaide United Form

It was a disappointing season for Adelaide in the A-League last term, with the team finishing in eighth spot with just nine wins from their 27 games and seven points adrift of the finals.

Adelaide are three-time Australia Cup champions, but they haven't been beyond the quarter-finals since the 2019 season.

The Reds have survived two tough tests in their current Australia Cup campaign, overcoming Blacktown City 3-2 on the road in the Round of 32 before edging out Olympic Kingsway by the same scoreline in the Round of 16.

Luka Jovanovic has scored in both games for Adelaide and will again be the main threat up front.

Western Sydney Wanderers Form

The Wanderers also missed out on the finals last A-League season, with a run of three defeats from their last four games seeing them finish in seventh position, two points off.

Western Sydney have made waves in the transfer window this off-season, securing the services of Juan Mata - although the World Cup and Champions League winner will not make his debut in this game.

The Australia Cup hasn't really been a happy hunting ground for the Wanderers, with their best result a semi-final finish back in 2018.

The Wanderers beat Brisbane City 2-1 in the Round of 32 before crushing Queensland Lions 4-0 in the Round of 16, with Nicolas Milanovic, Zac Sapsford, Marcus Antonsson and Marcus Younis getting on the scoresheet.

Verdict

Tough game to call, but Western Sydney won the three meetings between the sides last season and I'm backing the Wanderers to come out on top and reach the semi-finals.
