Palmeiras vs Chelsea Predictions

A potentially tight contest could develop, with Palmeiras capable of testing a Chelsea side that has flattered to deceive in the US. Under 2.5 goals is my first pick, while I also fancy the Brazilians to avoid defeat in 90 minutes.

Stats

  • Palmeiras are unbeaten in 13 of their last 15 matches
  • Palmeiras have seen under 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 matches
  • Chelsea have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 9 matches
  • Chelsea failed to win 2 of their last 3 matches (90 minutes)

Head to Head

Palmeiras and Chelsea will meet for the second time this weekend. Chelsea edged to a 2-1 extra-time win when these sides last met in this competition in 2022.

Palmeiras Form

Palmeiras secured their place in Saturday's FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinal after a gruelling victory against fellow Brazilians Botafogo at Lincoln Financial Field.

Following a goalless 90 minutes, Paulinho's goal, ten minutes into extra time, secured a quarter-final berth for the Verdão. Abel Ferreira's side remain unbeaten in four games played at the finals, including group phase draws against Inter Miami and Al Ahly.

Defensively strong, Palmeiras conceded just seven goals in their last 14 matches played (all competitions).

Palmeiras Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Mateus, Marcelo Lomba, Weverton
Defenders: Marcos Rocha, Bruno Fuchs, Agustín Giay, Vanderlan, Mayke, Micael, Gustavo Gómez, Joaquín Piquerez, Murilo, Kaiky Naves, Luiz Benedetti
Midfielders: Aníbal Moreno, Felipe Anderson, Richard Ríos, Raphael Veiga, Lucas Evangelista, Emiliano Martínez, Allan
Forwards: Vitor Roque, Paulinho, Facundo Torres, Maurício, Luighi, Thalys, Estêvão, José Manuel López

Abel Ferreira has a couple of confirmed absentees to deal with this weekend. Gustavo Gomez and Joaquin Piquerez are both suspended for Saturday's matchup in Philadelphia.

Teenage sensation Estevao is set to feature ahead of his move to Chelsea later this summer.

Chelsea Form

Chelsea make the trip to Philadelphia after a remarkable extra-time victory against Benfica in the round of sixteen. In a contest delayed by over two hours due to inclement weather, the Blues eventually secured their place in the last eight with a 4-1 success at Bank of America Stadium.

Enzo Maresca's men have shown some up-and-down form in this competition. Enzo Maresca's side finished second in Group D after a 3-1 defeat against Flamengo last week.

Like the Brazilians, Chelsea boast a solid defensive record in recent matches. The Londoners kept clean sheets in four of their last seven matches.

Chelsea Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Robert Sánchez, Filip Jörgensen, Mike Penders, Gabriel Slonina
Defenders: Marc Cucurella, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoît Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Mamadou Sarr, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Malo Gusto, Aarón Anselmino, Josh Acheampong
Midfielders: Enzo Fernández, Dário Essugo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Moisés Caicedo, Andrey Santos, Roméo Lavia
Forwards: Pedro Neto, Liam Delap, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Tyrique George, Marc Guiu, Joao Pedro

Head coach Maresca can call on new signing Joao Pedro after the Brazilian forward completed a move to Stamford Bridge earlier this week. Pedro Neto is likely to keep his place in the forward positions, though, after scoring in each of the Blues' last three matches in the US.

Wesley Fofana is the only confirmed injury absentee for the Premier League side.

Verdict

After both sides required extra time to secure their place in the last eight, fatigue could prove a factor in Philadelphia. Under 2.5 goals is my first pick, with Palmeiras backed to avoid defeat in 90 minutes.
