River Plate vs Monterrey Preview

It’s been a long time since River Plate missed to score in their matches across competitions. A majority of Monterrey’s recent games were action-packed, so BTTS is the best bet.

  • Monterrey have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5 matches.

HTH

This is going to be the third head to head match between River Plate and Monterrey.

The first one was won by River 1-0 in January 2023, the second ending in a 1-1 draw one year later.

River Plate Form

River Plate had a strong start to the Club World Cup, beating Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 in the opening round with Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi and Max Meza appearing on the scoresheet.

Marcelo Gallardo’s side started the Argentine Liga Professional playoffs with a commanding 3-0 victory against Baracas Central in the Round of 16, Paulo Diaz, Ignacio Fernandez and Marcos Acuna finding the net.

However, their title hopes were gone in the quarterfinals which they lost to Platense after a penalty shootout (1-1 in regular time). River dominated with 2.22-0.63 xG, 74% possession and 21-7 shots but still lost.

Monterrey Form

Like their upcoming opponents, Monterrey also failed to progress far in the Liga MX playoffs.

After eliminating UNAM Pumas 2-0 in the Play-In tournament (with German Berterame and Nelson Deossa on target), they were knocked out in the quarterfinals by Toluca after a 4-4 aggregate draw.

Monterrey began their 2025 Club World Cup campaign with a solid 1-1 draw against Inter Milan. Sergio Ramos opened the scoring with a header in the 25th minute, after which Monterrey focused primarily on defending.

Team News

Striker Sebastian Driussi is doubtful for this match after suffering an ankle injury in the first match against Urawa. Enzo Perez is also under a question mark due to a muscle problem. Agustin Ruberto is out with a long-term injury.

As for the Mexican side, Carlos Salcedo is recovering from an ACL injury, while Oliver Torres is doubtful.

Predicted Starting Lineups

River Plate: Armani, Montiel, Martinez, Pezzella, Acuna, Castano, Galoppo, Fernandez, Mastantuono, Borja, Colidio

Monterrey: Andrada, Medina, Ramos, Guzman, Chavez, Canales, Rodriguez, Torres, Arteaga, Ocampos, Berterame

Verdict

Monterrey have scored at least one goal in their last 15 appearances. Eight of River Plate’s last nine matches have seen BTTS, so this is the best bet for this clash.
