Argentina vs Chile Predictions

Argentina have a great record against Chile in the World Cup qualifiers. That should continue here with La Roja missing influential midfielder and captain Arturo Vidal.

  • Argentina have won 4 of their last 5 matches (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Argentina have kept 6 clean sheets in their last 9 home matches (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Argentina’s Lionel Messi has scored 9 goals in his last 8 matches for Barcelona (all competitions).
  • Argentina have won their last 4 matches against Chile (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Chile have lost 7 of their last 8 away matches (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Chile have failed to score in 5 of their last 7 away matches (World Cup qualifiers).

Head to Head

Argentina have a 37-3 advantage against Chile with 13 draws in 53 matches.

Argentina Form

Argentina have had a solid start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, winning three matches with one draw.

La Albiceleste began with a 1-0 home win against Ecuador with Lionel Messi’s penalty the difference.

Lionel Scaloni’s side then won 2-1 in Bolivia, coming from behind with Lautaro Martínez and Joaquín Correa on target.

Argentina drew 1-1 against Paraguay but bounced back with a 2-0 win in Peru. Nicolás González and Lautaro Martínez were the goalscorers in Lima.

Argentina Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Franco Armani, Agustín Marchesín, Juan Musso, Emiliano Martínez
Defenders: Nicolás Otamendi, Nicolás Tagliafico, Germán Pezzella, Juan Foyth, Gonzalo Montiel, Lucas Martínez Quarta, Lisandro Martínez, Nahuel Molina, José Luis Palomino, Cristian Romero
Midfielders: Ángel Di María, Marcos Acuña, Leandro Paredes, Giovani Lo Celso, Rodrigo De Paul, Guido Rodríguez, Nicolás Domínguez, Lucas Ocampos, Exequiel Palacios, Joaquín Correa, Emiliano Buendía
Forwards: Lionel Messi (Captain), Sergio Agüero, Lautaro Martínez, Ángel Correa, Lucas Alario, Nicolás González, Alejandro Gómez, Julián Álvarez

Paulo Dybala misses out but there are plenty of weapons up front in Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero and Lautaro Martínez.

Messi has scored 71 goals in 142 internationals, Agüero with 41 goals in 97 internationals.

Chile Form

Chile have won one of their opening four World Cup qualifiers.

La Roja lost 2-1 in Uruguay after conceding deep into added time. They then drew 2-2 against Colombia with Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez, conceding yet another goal in added time.

Martín Lasarte’s side won 2-0 against Peru with Vidal scoring both goals.

Chile’s last qualifier was a 2-1 defeat in Venezuela. Vidal equalised before they conceded another late goal, this time in the 81st minute.

Chile beat Bolivia 2-1 in a friendly in March, Luis Jiménez and Jean Meneses on target in Rancagua.

Chile Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Claudio Bravo (captain), Gabriel Arias, Gabriel Castellón
Defenders: Gary Medel, Mauricio Isla, Jean Beausejour, Eugenio Mena, Guillermo Maripán, Enzo Roco, Sebastián Vegas, Francisco Sierralta, Yonathan Andía
Midfielders: Charles Aránguiz, Luis Jiménez, Erick Pulgar, César Pinares, Claudio Baeza, Bryan Carrasco, Pablo Galdames, Tomás Alarcón, Juan Leiva
Forwards: Alexis Sánchez, Eduardo Vargas, Fabián Orellana, Felipe Mora, Jean Meneses, Carlos Palacios, Clemente Montes, Ben Brereton

Two important midfielders are out with Arturo Vidal testing positive for COVID-19 and José Pedro Fuenzalida injured. Much of the responsibility will fall on Charles Aránguiz.

There is plenty of experience at the back with Claudio Bravo, Gary Medel, Mauricio Isla and Jean Beausejour all earning over 100 caps.

Forwards Alexis Sánchez and Eduardo Vargas have combined to score 83 international goals.

Losing Arturo Vidal is a big blow for the visitors. With Chile’s influential captain out, I am backing Argentina to be too good in the World Cup qualifiers.

Lionel Messi scored nine goals in his last eight matches for Barcelona and is backed in the goalscorer markets.
