Lionel Scaloni’s side ended the group stage with a 2-0 win against Poland. Messi saw a penalty saved before Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez scored in a convincing victory.

La Albiceleste beat Australia 2-1 in the Round of 16 with Messi and Álvarez scoring to establish a 2-0 lead and holding on after they lost control.

Argentina overcame the Netherlands in the semi-finals. Lionel Messi assisted Nahuel Molina before netting a penalty, Oranje fighting back to earn a 2-2 draw before the South American side won the penalty shootout.

The Blazers got past Japan on penalties in the Round of 16. Ivan Perisic equalised I the second half, goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic standing strong in the shootout. 

Croatia shocked Brazil in the quarter-finals. The game went to extra time after a 0-0 draw, Bruno Petkovic making it 1-1 in the 117th minute before winning the penalty shootout.
