Ecuador host Uruguay in a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado. Luis Suárez is the main man in this one with the Uruguay striker set to star in Quito.

Ecuador were eliminated in the 2019 Copa America group stage with one point earned in three matches. A 4-0 defeat to Uruguay in the opening match set the tone.

La Tricolor played five friendlies between September and November 2019. Ecuador won 1-0 against Peru and 3-0 against Bolivia but a 6-1 defeat to Argentina was a worrying sign.

Ecuador responded with a 3-0 win against beating Trinidad and Tobago in Portoviejo. Alan Franco opened the scoring and Enner Valencia bagged a brace.

Óscar Tabárez’s side played six friendlies from September to November 2019. They beat Costa Rica 2-1, Peru 1-0 and Hungary 2-1. Three draws came against United States (1-1), Peru (1-1) and Argentina (2-2). 

Uruguay beat Chile 2-1 at home in their opening World Cup qualifier. Luis Suárez opened the scoring from the penalty spot, Maxi Gómez with the winner in added time.

Experienced goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, centre-back Jose Giminez and striker Edinson Cavani were not called up. 

Diego Godín is the captain and leader in central defence with 136 caps. Martín Cáceres is currently sitting on 99 caps.
