The World Cup upsets keep coming, after Japan battled back to stun Germany 2-1 on Wednesday.

The Germans dominated much of the contest and took a deserved lead when Ilkay Gundogan converted a penalty just after the half-an-hour mark.

They failed to turn that dominance into goals though, and were punished during an eight-minute spell late in the game.

Substitute Ritsu Doan hauled Japan level with just 15 minutes to go in regulation time.

Takuma Asano then completed a famous comeback when he latched onto a long ball forward and fired past Manuel Neuer from a tight angle.

Germany will now look to bounce back from the loss on Sunday, but they face a tough fixture in the form of Spain.

Japan, meanwhile, will take on Costa Rica knowing that a victory will put their fate in their own hands.
