Japan vs Syria Preview

Japan might experiment with roster here since they already qualified for the next phase. Syria’s biggest strength is defense, so I will back under 3.5 goals in Hiroshima.

Head to Head

Japan have a 7-0 advantage against Syria with 1 draw in 8 matches.

They last met in November 2023, the game being won by Japan 5-0.

Japan Form

Japan are having an impeccable run in the AFC World Cup Qualifiers 2nd Round, topping Group B with 15 points from five matches, already securing a spot in the next phase, scoring 19 and conceding zero goals so far.

The Samurai Blue cruised past Myanmar last week, beating the opposition 5-0, Keito Nakamura and Koki Ogawa scoring two goals each, Ritsu Doan also appearing on the score sheet.

Japan were awarded a 3-0 forfeit win after North Korea called off a qualifying match in late March. They beat the same opponent at home 1-0 with Ao Tanaka scoring the only goal in the 2nd minute.

Hajime Moriyasu’s side had a disappointing run in the Asian Cup earlier this year, being stopped by Iran 2-1 in the quarterfinal.

Syria Form

Syria have collected seven points from their five qualifying matches in the 2nd phase so far, sitting in the 2nd position with one point advantage over Korea DPR.

They slipped against last-placed Myanmar in late March, winning just one point against the underdog 1-1. Five days later, Syria crushed the same opponent 7-0 at home, Omar Khrbin being the man of the match scoring a hat-trick.

The most recent appearance saw Syria lose an important clash to Korea DPR 1-0, conceding late goal.

Like their upcoming opponents, Syrians were also eliminated by Iran in the Asian Cup 2024 in Round of 16 after a penalty shootout (1-1 in regular time).

Verdict

Japan have one of the best defensive lines in Asia, keeping three clean sheets in a row. Syria allowed just three goals in their last five games so under 3.5 is the best bet.
