Uruguay vs Argentina Preview

Argentina are having a great run in the WC qualifiers, sitting top of the table but will be without Leo Messi and Lautaro Martinez in Montevideo. Almost half of Uruguay’s matches have ended without a winner, so I am predicting a draw.

Uruguay have been a tough team to beat in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers, having five wins, five draws and two defeats so far and sit in high 2nd place with 20 points.

La Celeste ended their five-game winless run with a 3-2 home victory against Colombia in mid-November, Rodrigo Aguirre, Manuel Ugarte and Davinson Sanchez (own goal) appearing on the scoresheet.

A couple of days later, they got away with a 1-1 road draw against favored Brazil, Federico Valverde breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute, but they conceded seven minutes later.

Argentina Form

Argentina have been the most dominant force in the South American WC qualifiers, collecting 25 points in 12 rounds and they can punch their ticket for the biggest football event with a win or two in the remaining six games.

They struggled with consistency in late 2024 though. After a 1-1 road draw against Venezuela, Argentina demolished Bolivia 6-0 in front of the home crowd in mid-October.

La Albiceleste lost their first appearance in November to Paraguay 2-1 even though Lautaro Martinez put them ahead in the 11th minute, but bounced back four days later with a 1-0 home win against Peru, Lautaro being the sole scorer.

Team News

Uruguay’s Manuel Ugarte is serving a one-match suspension on Friday, while Marcelo Bielsa has no injury concerns. Luis Suarez has withdrawn from the national team in September, while Lucas Olaza was not called up.

The reigning world champions will be without their star player Leo Messi who is recovering from an adductor injury, joining Gonzalo Montiel, Giovani Lo Celso and Paulo Dybala on the sidelines. Lautaro Martinez was also withdrawn from the squad due to a hamstring injury.
