Uruguay vs Ecuador Predictions

Both teams have struggled for goals in recent qualifiers, and a tight contest is anticipated at the Estadio Centenario.

Under 2.5 goals is my top tip on Tuesday.

  • Uruguay have seen under 2.5 goals in 7 of their last 8 matches
  • Uruguay have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 9 home matches (World Cup qualifiers)
  • Ecuador have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 5 matches
  • Ecuador have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 away matches (World Cup qualifiers)

Head to Head

Uruguay and Ecuador have met on 16 previous occasions since 1999. Uruguay have the advantage, scoring eight wins to Ecuador's four.

Ecuador fell to a 1-0 defeat when they last visited Uruguay in 2021.

Uruguay Form

Uruguay return to Montevideo after a surprise 1-0 loss in Peru last Thursday. An 88th-minute strike from Miguel Araujo proved the difference as the Uruguayan winless run extended to four matches.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have now failed to score in their last three World Cup qualifiers after back-to-back goalless draws against Paraguay and Venezuela in September.

At the halfway point in the qualification campaign, La Celeste sit third in the group, four points behind leaders Argentina.

Uruguay Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Sergio Rochet, Santiago Mele, Franco Israel
Defenders: José Giménez (captain), Mathías Olivera, Guillermo Varela, Marcelo Saracchi, Santiago Bueno, José Luis Rodríguez, Santiago Mouriño
Midfielders: Federico Valverde (vice-captain), Nahitan Nández, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Nicolás de la Cruz, Manuel Ugarte, Maximiliano Araújo, Emiliano Martínez, Nicolás Fonseca, Facundo Bernal, Marco Oroná, Lucas Sanabria
Forwards: Darwin Núñez, Facundo Pellistri, Facundo Torres, Cristian Olivera, Luciano Rodríguez, Matías Abaldo, Joaquín Lavega, Pablo Suárez

Head coach Bielsa is expected to make some changes to his selection following a disappointing performance in Thursday's defeat in Lima. Jose Maria Gimenez, Matias Olivera and Ronald Araujo are available again after completing suspensions against Peru.

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur serves the final game of his ban on Tuesday.

Ecuador Form

Ecuador make the trip to Montevideo after a goalless draw against Paraguay in Quito last Thursday. Sebastián Beccacece's men have kept clean sheets in five of their last six World Cup qualifiers.

A strong run of form has seen Ecuador avoid defeat in all but two of nine qualifiers played since September last year (W4, D3, L2).

Despite a three-point deduction, La Tri find themselves inside the qualification zone, placed fifth with 12 points on the board.

Ecuador Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Hernán Galíndez, Moisés Ramírez, Gonzalo Valle
Defenders: Ángelo Preciado, Pervis Estupiñán, Félix Torres, Piero Hincapié, Cristian Ramírez, Xavier Arreaga, Willian Pacho, Jhoanner Chávez, Joel Ordóñez
Midfielders: Moisés Caicedo, Alan Franco, Gonzalo Plata, Jeremy Sarmiento, Kendry Páez, John Yeboah, Alan Minda, Pedro Vite, John Mercado, Óscar Zambrano
Forwards: Enner Valencia (captain), Kevin Rodríguez, Leonardo Campana

Sebastián Beccacece is likely to retain faith in the same XI held to a scoreless draw in Quito last week.

Chelsea midfielder Moisés Caicedo is poised to win his 50th cap on Tuesday.

Verdict

A tight affair seems likely with Uruguay struggling for goals, and Ecuador in such strong form defensively.

Under 2.5 goals is my only choice for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier in Montevideo.
