Uruguay vs Paraguay Predictions

Uruguay have superior individual quality with Paraguay expected to be second best. I am backing Luis Suarez to continue his fine form and lead Uruguay to victory in the World Cup qualifiers.

  • Uruguay have won 10 of their last 13 home matches (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Uruguay have kept 6 clean sheets in their last 11 home matches (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Uruguay’s Luis Suárez has scored 5 goals in his last 4 internationals (all competitions).
  • Uruguay have won to nil in 3 of their last 4 home matches against Paraguay (World Cup qualifiers).
  • Uruguay’s Luis Suárez has scored 2 goals in his last 3 matches against Paraguay (all competitions).
  • Paraguay have seen BTTS No in 8 of their last 11 away matches (World Cup qualifiers).

Head to Head

Uruguay have a 20-13 advantage against Paraguay with 7 draws in 40 matches.

They last met in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers with Uruguay winning 4-0 at home and 2-1 in Paraguay.

Uruguay Form

Uruguay have had two wins and two defeats in the World Cup qualifiers.

La Celeste began with a 2-1 home win against Chile with Luis Suárez opening the scoring and Maxi Gómez scoring the winner in added time.

Óscar Tabárez’s side then lost 4-2 in Ecuador. They were 4-0 down before Luis Suárez scored two late penalties.

Uruguay won 3-0 in Colombia with Edinson Cavani, Suárez and Darwin Núñez on target before a 2-0 home defeat to Brazil when Cavani was sent off in the 71st minute.

Uruguay Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Fernando Muslera, Martín Campaña, Sergio Rochet
Defenders: Diego Godín (captain), Martín Cáceres, José María Giménez, Sebastián Coates, Matías Viña, Giovanni González, Ronald Araújo, Camilo Cándido
Midfielders: Matías Vecino, Nahitan Nández, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Torreira, Federico Valverde, Nicolás De La Cruz, Fernando Gorriarán
Forwards: Luis Suárez, Jonathan Rodríguez, Brian Rodríguez, Brian Ocampo, Ignacio Ramírez, Facundo Torres

Edinson Cavani is suspended and has been left out of the squad. Luis Suárez will be the main man up front after scoring 63 international goals.

There is plenty of strength in central defence with Diego Godín José Giménez and Sebastián Coates all options.

Midfield includes Matías Vecino, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Torreira and Federico Valverde.

Paraguay Form

Paraguay are undefeated in their opening four World Cup qualifiers.

La Albirroja drew 2-2 at home against Peru, Ángel Romero scoring both goals before conceding in the 85th minute.

Eduardo Berizzo’s side won 1-0 in Venezuela thanks to a late Gastón Giménez strike before a 1-1 draw in Argentina.

Paraguay’s last match was a 2-2 draw at home against Bolivia. Ángel Romero opened the scoring from the penalty spot with Kaku equalising in the 72nd minute.

Paraguay Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Antony Silva, Alfredo Aguilar, Juan Espínola, Gerardo Ortíz
Defenders: Gustavo Gómez (captain), Júnior Alonso, Fabián Balbuena, Santiago Arzamendia, Juan Escobar, Robert Rojas, Omar Alderete, Alberto Espínola, Alexis Duarte, David Martínez
Midfielders: Óscar Romero, Richard Sánchez, Mathías Villasanti, Alejandro Gamarra, Robert Piris Da Motta, Gastón Giménez, Ángel Cardozo, Jorge Morel, Andrés Cubas, Hugo Martínez, Braian Ojeda
Forwards: Miguel Almirón, Ángel Romero, Antonio Bareiro, Braian Samudio, Carlos González, Gabriel Ávalos, Julio Enciso

Paraguay’s squad lacks experience with only six players playing with more than 20 caps.

Ángel Romero is top scorer with six goals, three coming in his last four matches.

Uruguay have a far stronger side than Paraguay and can make it count in Montevideo. Luis Suarez has scored five goals in his last four internationals and is backed in the goalscorer markets.
