Carlos Queiroz’s side played four friendlies, starting with a 2-1 defeat against Algeria. They then beat Uruguay 1-0, drew 1-1 against Senegal and beat Nicaragua 1-0.

Iran started the World Cup with an embarrassing 6-2 defeat against England. They were 4-0 when Mehdi Taremi scored the first of his two goals, Iran having just 22% possession.
