Wales are staring an early World Cup elimination in the face after a 2-0 defeat to Iran on Friday.

Robert Page’s side went into the match needing a win following a 1-1 draw with the United States, while the Iranians were desperate to bounce back from a 6-2 drubbing at the hands of England.

It was Iran who started the brighter though and thought they had broken the deadlock, only for VAR to rule out an Ali Gholizadeh ‘goal’.

They then hit the post twice in the second half as the opening goal continued to elude them.

However, it finally came deep into added time after Wales had seen goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey receive for a red card for a reckless challenge after racing out of his area.

Rouzbeh Cheshmi rifled in from 20 yards in the 98th minute, and Ramin Rezaeian then wrapped it up on the break three minutes later.

Wales are now 1/33 with bet365 to exit the World Cup at the group stage, while Iran are also 8/11 to fall at the first hurdle ahead of England’s clash with the USA later today.

Next up for Wales is a must-win meeting with England next Tuesday, while Iran face the USA at the same time.
