France vs Spain Preview

Both sides are having an impressive tournament so far, especially France who won four of their five games in regular time. Spain outplayed Japan and Morocco in the playoffs, so I expect a close match with extra-time needed to determine the winner.

  • France are unbeaten in their last 11 matches.
  • Spain are unbeaten in 12 of their last 13 matches.

Head to Head

This is going to be the second head to head match between France and Spain at the Olympics.

The first one ended without a winner 1-1 in July 1996.

France Form

France started the tournament with a commanding 3-0 victory against the United States, all three goals being scored in the second half through Alexandre Lacazette, Michael Olise and Loic Bade.

Les Bleus made it two in a row in the second round with a narrow 1-0 victory against Guinea, Kiliann Sildillia on target in the 75th minute.

They wrapped up the group stages with a convincing 3-0 win over New Zealand, Jean-Philippe Mateta breaking the deadlock in 19th minute, Desire Doue and Arnaud Kalimuendo finishing the job in the second half.

France scored early in their quarterfinal match against Argentina through Jean-Philippe Mateta, which turned out to be the final score, ending the game with 0.74-1.10 expected goals, 39% possession and 9-15 shots.

Tournament hosts struggled in the semifinal against Egypt, Mateta finding a late equalizer and taking the match to extra-time where they won 3-1.

Spain Form

Spain opened the Olympics 2024 tournament with a tight tussle and a 2-1 victory against underdog Uzbekistan, Marc Pubill breaking the deadlock in 28th minute, conceding a goal 17 minutes later. Sergio Gomez set the final score in 62nd minute.

The Red Fury looked much better in their second appearance, dispatching Dominican Republic 3-1, Fermin Lopez, Alex Baena and Miguel Gutierrez on target.

They were denied 1st place in the group after losing to Egypt 2-1 in the final round.

Spain earned a commanding 3-0 victory against Japan in the quarterfinals, Fermin Lopez scoring a brace, Abel Ruiz also on target.

Santi Denia’s side earned the spot in the grand finals after beating Morocco 2-1 in the semifinal. They were down by one goal in that match, Fermin Lopez and Juanlu Sanchez scoring in the second half.

Verdict

Spain slipped just once so far in the tournament against Egypt, while Les Bleus also needed extra-time to eliminate the same opponent. I am expecting a close match in the grand finals, draw being the best bet.
