What is the 2. Bundesliga?
The 2. Bundesliga is the second division of professional men’s football in Germany. The competition sits below the Bundesliga and above the 3. Liga in the German football league system.
The 2. Bundesliga averaged 21,717 spectators during the 2016–17 season which made the competition the world's most-watched secondary football league over the Championship in England.
125 clubs have competed in the 2. Bundesliga since its foundation in 1974.
2. Bundesliga History
The 2. Bundesliga was established in 1974 and began with two divisions of 20 clubs each. In 1981 the league was reduced to a single division, changing once again in 1991 due East Germany clubs beginning to participate.
The current format was adopted in 1994 with the 2. Bundesliga featuring 18 clubs that fight for promotion and to avoid relegation.
2. Bundesliga Promotion & Relegation
The top two clubs in the 2. Bundesliga are directly promoted to the Bundesliga the following season. The third placed club competes in a two legged play-off against the club that finished 16th in the Bundesliga to determine which club plays in the Bundesliga and the 2. Bundesliga the following season.
The clubs that finish 17th and 18th in the 2. Bundesliga are automatically relegated to the 3. Liga. The club that finishes 16th in the 2. Bundesliga competes in a two legged play-off against the club that finished 3rd in the 3. Liga to determine which club plays in the 2. Bundesliga and the 3. Liga the following season.
Qualification for the DFB-Pokal
All 18 clubs in the 2. Bundesliga qualify for the DFB-Pokal or German Cup.
2. Bundesliga Player Records
Willi Landgraf holds the record for most appearances in the 2. Bundesliga with 508 appearances split between four clubs. Landgraf made 119 appearances for Rot-Weiss Essen, 107 for FC 08 Homburg, 94 for FC Gütersloh before ending his career at Alemannia Aachen (188 appearances).
Dieter Schatzschneider hold the record for most goals in the 2. Bundesliga with 154 scored for SC Fortuna Köln and Hannover 96. Karl-Heinz Mödrath is not far behind with 150 goals scored with Alemannia Aachen and Fortuna Köln.
