The Billy Goats are on target for a swift return to the Bundesliga but have to keep winning to maintain the pace with Hamburger SV. Cologne had a five match winning run snapped on the final day of 2018 with a 3-2 home defeat against Bochum.

Markus Anfang has two new additions with Florian Kainz signed from Werder Bremen and Johannes Geis moving from Schalke. Both players are quality additions and will have to adjust to a new team and system.

Anthony Modeste is still ineligibile, Jonas Hector is suspended with injuries to Louis Schaub, Marco Höger, Vincent Koziello and Lasse Sobiech.
