An Introduction to Betting On The Bundesliga

German football is well known around the world with the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga matches frequently broadcast on various television channels in the UK, USA and live online streaming services. The fan culture is a big drawcard with many clubs supported by passionate fans who fill stadiums to their capacity on a regular basis.

Some of the best club sides in the world ply their trade in Germany, most notably Bayern Munich who won the European Cup three times in a row from 1974-1976 before winning the UEFA Champions League in 2001 and 2013. Hamburg were successful in the 1983 European Cup with Borussia Dortmund winning the UEFA Champions League in 1997.

Bundesliga clubs regularly compete in the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League which further increases their appeal. As such, betting on the competition is popular with bookmakers offering an extensive range of bet types and markets for Bundesliga football.

Bundesliga Champions, UEFA Qualification and Relegation

The 2018/19 season will be the 56th season in Bundesliga history. The competition began in 1963 and features the best teams in German football who battle to be crowned champions by finishing top of the Bundesliga league table.

Bundesliga Champions

The Bundesliga is contested by 18 clubs who each play 34 matches during the season - 17 at home and 17 away. There are no playoffs at the top of the Bundesliga table to determine who qualifies for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

Clubs are awarded three points for a win and one for a draw. The club that accumulates the most points after 34 matches is crowned champions. When multiple teams earn the same points they are separated by the following criteria:

  • goal difference
  • goals scored
  • head-to-head points
  • head-to-head goal difference
  • head-to-head away goals scored
  • away goals scored

In the unlikely event that teams can’t be separated a playoff will occur.

Bundesliga UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League Qualification

Germany currently have a strong UEFA coefficient ranking, meaning the top four Bundesliga clubs automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group.

The fifth placed team in the Bundesliga is guaranteed a spot in the UEFA Europa League group stage. The sixth placed team has to qualify for the Europa League from the third qualifying round.

The winner of the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) also qualify for group stage of UEFA Europa League regardless of league position. If the club that wins the DFB-Pokal already qualified for the UEFA competitions through their Bundesliga position, the seventh placed club earns the spot in the Europa League third qualifying round.

Bundesliga Relegation

The clubs that finish in the bottom two positions of the Bundesliga table each season are automatically relegated to German football’s second division, known as the 2. Bundesliga. The club that finishes 16th in the Bundesliga has to contest a two legged a playoff against the club that finished third in the 2. Bundesliga.

Despite the chance for the third placed 2. Bundesliga club getting promoted via the playoffs it rarely occurs. The Bundesliga club that finishes in 16th position may have had a poor season but still has too much class and quality for the 2. Bundesliga side over two legs.

Bundesliga History

Germany had been traditionally divided into regional leagues before or a national league was discussed in the 1950s. Clubs in East and West Germany were divided after World War II with many unable to hold onto their best players.

West Germany were knocked out of the 1962 FIFA World Cup by Yugoslavia which forced the Deutscher Fußball Bund (DFB) to act. The Bundesliga began in the 1963/64 season, 1. FC Köln crowned the first Bundesliga champion over Meidericher SV and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich Dominance

The most successful club in Bundesliga history has been Bavarian powerhouse Bayern Munich. FC Bayern announced themselves in the 1968-69 season with the first of their 27 titles.

Bayern secured their sixth straight title in 2017/18 and hold a number of Bundesliga records. They broke the points record in the 2012-13 season when they accumulated 91 points after winning 29 of their 34 matches.

Bayern Munich also hold the highest points per game average and scored the most goals in any Bundesliga season to date, 101 goals scored in 1971-72 which is still the most goals in Bundesliga history for a single season.

Bundesliga Player Records

The Bundesliga has featured some of the best footballers of all time. Karl-Heinz Körbel made an unbelievable 602 performances as a defender for Eintracht Frankfurt in a top flight career that spanned almost 20 years.

The top goalscorer in Bundesliga history is Gerd Müller who scored 365 goals for Bayern Munich from 1964-79. The 1970 European Footballer of the Year and star of West Germany’s 1970 FIFA World Cup victory also holds the record for the most goals scored in a single season with 40 in the 1971/72 season.

Understanding Bundesliga Betting Odds

Bookmakers offer a range of Bundesliga betting odds from individual matches to season long outright markets.

For a comprehensive list and detailed descriptions of football bet types, please read our How To Bet On Football - Football Bets Explained guide.

Bundesliga Winner Odds

The Bundesliga winner odds is an outright market where the bet is placed on who you think will be the Bundesliga winner at the end of the season.

Below we can see an example of Bundesliga winner odds listed at bet365 before the start of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season.

How to Bet On The Bundesliga Winner Market

With Bayern Munich being so dominant in recent seasons it will take a significant upset to dethrone the Bavarians. There have been some major upsets such as Leicester’s remarkable English Premier League win in 2016/17, but there are realistically only a handful of clubs that can challenge Bayern Munich.

The 2018/19 Bundesliga Winner odds reflect this with Borussia Dortmund, Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig given some hope by bookmakers with Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen longer odds. It’s advisable to wait a few matches into the season to see how things are going, after 10 matches there should be a clearer picture of which clubs can contend for the title.

Bundesliga Winner 'Without Bayern Munich' Odds

Given the strength of Bayern Munich’s squad and ability to attract the best talent in the Bundesliga, many bookmakers offer a ‘Winner Without Bayern Munich’ market. Here you are betting on which club will finish highest on the Bundesliga table without Bayern Munich included.

Borussia Dortmund will often feature prominently in this market due to the size and history of the club, but there is often value to be found in some lesser known clubs. Wolfsburg finished 2nd in the 2014/15 Bundesliga season, RB Leipzig finished 2nd in 2016/17 with Schalke 04 finishing 2nd in the 2017/18 season.

The likes of Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen, Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen are clubs that all have an outside chance in the Bundesliga Winner 'Without Bayern Munich' market.

Bundesliga Top 4 Finish Odds

The Bundesliga Top 4 finish market is a popular way to bet on the Bundesliga. Ruling out Bayern Munich who are virtually guaranteed to finish in the top 4, there is often plenty of value to be found if you have some sharp knowledge about a club that might be flying under the radar.

Clubs that have strengthened their squad over the summer are prime candidates alongside those that have appointed a good manager. Quite often these clubs might start the season slow as they adjust to the new managers ideas and integrate new players, but will fly home in the second half of the season with their top 4 odds shortening each week.

There are a number of other similar outright markets available in Bundesliga betting such as:

  • Top 3 Finish
  • Top 6 Finish
  • Top 10 Finish
  • Bottom 2 Finish
  • To Finish Bottom

If you know your German football and read our Bundesliga outright betting predictions you can find value odds on clubs that fly under the radar. They might not be household names and loved by the media but have more than enough potential get into the top 6 or top 10.

As mentioned above, these markets can also be full of value when teams endure a slow start to the season before finishing strong such as Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018/19 season.

Bundesliga Relegation Odds

Many punters love to get involved in the Bundesliga relegation odds. This market is simply selecting a team to get relegated into the 2. Bundesliga by finishing in the bottom two or losing the playoff. Clubs that recently won promotion to the Bundesliga are prime candidates alongside smaller clubs that may have narrowly survived their first season in the top flight.

There is often value to be found in this market midway through the season, especially on teams that have started well but are expected to be found out in the second half of the Bundesliga season.

Bundesliga Top Goalscorer Odds

The most popular player betting option in the Bundesliga is the top goalscorer market. Players like Robert Lewandowski will always feature prominently in this market with the odds listed accordingly.

Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Lewandowski a run for his money before moving to the English Premier League with Arsenal. Recently we have seen Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic and Dortmund’s Marco Reus challenging Lewandowski for the top goalscorer title.

There are a few factors to take into consideration when planning on who to bet on to be the Bundesliga top scorer. These include how well a team is likely to perform, playing style and tactical approach, competition for places in the starting XI and injury history.

Bundesliga Betting Statistics

The Bundesliga is comparable to many top European competitions in relation to a percentage of home wins, draws and away wins. There is also no significant difference in the amount of Bundesliga matches being a draw at halftime, clubs leading at halftime/fulltime, the final result when the match is a draw at halftime and the most common winning margin.

When it comes to goals scored however, over the last five football seasons the Bundesliga has seen the second highest number of goals scored in the major European leagues behind the Dutch Eredivisie.

How Often Do Both Teams Score (BTTS) In The Bundesliga?

We saw that the Bundesliga has been one of Europe’s highest scoring leagues in recent years, but how many matches saw both teams score (BTTS)? The following table shows the percentage of matches that ended either BTTS Yes or BTTS No during the last five seasons:

Online Bundesliga Betting

There are various considerations to be taken into account before selecting which bookmakers to use for your Bundesliga betting.

The first consideration is the markets and odds each bookmaker offers on the Bundesliga. Not all bookmakers will have the same depth of market coverage which is applicable in outright and individual match markets.
