Head to Head
Bayer Leverkusen have won the last four matches against Union Berlin - two in the Bundesliga and two in German Cup.
Last season, Leverkusen won 2-0 at home in the league and 3-2 away from home. They then dumped Union Berlin out of the DFB Pokal 3-1 in the third meeting between the sides last season.
Union Berlin Form
Union Berlin are up to fifth in the Bundesliga after a five-game unbeaten run that has seen them draw three and win twice.
Urs Fischer's side drew their most recent match last week as they were held 2-2 at home to 10-man Wolfsburg.
Union Berlin came from behind to lead 2-1 through Sheraldo Becker and Robert Andrich. But they conceded an equaliser as Wout Weghorst slotted home from the penalty spot.
The unbeaten run started with two stalemates - a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich and a 2-2 draw with Stuttgart. They have also beaten Borussia Dortmund 2-1 and Werder Bremen 2-0.
Sandwiched in between the two wins was a 3-2 German Cup defeat to Paderborn. The Bundesliga II side scored three times in the opening 36 minutes on the way to causing an upset.
Union Berlin Team News
Forward Max Kruse, Joel Pohjanpalo and Anthony Ujah remain sidelined for Union Berlin with injuries. Midfielder Christian Gentner is also not ready to return.
Defender Nico Schlotterbeck could be named in the squad after overcoming a thigh injury, and midfielder Akaki Gogia has recovered from an ACL problem.
Union Berlin also have midfielder Grisha Promel back from suspension, and forward Marius Bulter available after a COVID-19 absence.
Bayer Leverkusen Form
Bayer Leverkusen ended a winless run with a confidence-boosting victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup on Tuesday.
Peter Bosz’s side were 4-1 winners of the round of 16 game, coming from a goal down and playing the last 17 minutes with 10 men after the dismissal of Jonathan Tah.
Leverkusen fell behind to a sixth minute goal from Amin Younes. But a Lucas Alario penalty and goals from Edmond Tapsoba and a Moussa Diaby double sent Bayer Levekusen through.
They had failed to win any of their previous three matches in the Bundesliga as a crippling injury took its toll.
Bayer Leverkusen lost 2-1 at home against Bayern Munich after conceding deep into added time. They then lost 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt and drew 1-1 with Werder Bremen as Patrik Schick equalised in the 70th minute.
Bayer Leverkusen Team News
Defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah has joined from Manchester United and could make his debut for Leverkusen.
Right backs Santiago Arias and Mitchell Weiser are injured. Midfielders Charles Aranguiz and Exequiel Palacios remain out, as does winger Karim Bellarabi and Brazilian forward Paulinho.
Midfielder Lars Bender is closing in on a return to the starting line-up, while defenders Wendell, Daley Sinkgraven and Edmond Tapsoba and midfielder Kerem Demirbay are all back after COVID-19 absences.
Midfielders Sven Bender and Florian Wirtz are rated doubtful along with striker Lucas Alario.
