Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt Preview & Tips: Bavarians to confirm domestic dominance
Bayern Munich failed in the Champions League but are too strong in Germany
Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt Preview & Tips
Bayern Munich take on Eintracht Frankfurt at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin aiming to win their 19th DFB-Pokal title. Manager Jupp Heynckes can go out in style with a domestic double before sailing into the sunset.
Bayern Munich
The German Champions wrapped up their sixth straight Bundesliga titles some time ago, the only test remaining being Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Cup. FC Bayern have shown themselves to be completely dominant in Germany and can confirm their status in Berlin.
The final Bundesliga matchday ended in a 4-1 home defeat against Stuttgart despite Bayern enjoying 80% possession. It didn’t spoil the party however, with players, staff and supporters getting plenty of practice for Oktoberfest as they celebrated another Bundesliga title.
Heynckes has players missing with Arturo Vidal, Arjen Robben, Jérôme Boateng all out. Kingsley Coman could earn a spot on the bench and we might see the long awaited return of Manuel Neuer as he attempts to make the World Cup squad.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Eintracht were on track for a spot in Europe but hit a bad run of form at the wrong time. Manager Niko Kovač was announced as the next Bayern Munich manager in mid-April, his side unable dropping to eighth in the Bundesliga despite making their second consecutive DFB-Pokal final.
They fell to a 1-0 loss at Schalke last time out which allowed Stuttgart to overtake them into seventh spot. Seventh would have been good enough for the Europa League next season, but they now have to beat Bayern on Saturday to take
Stuttgart’s place.
Kovač has a selection dilemma with just Gelson Fernandes missing through suspension. Striker Sébastien Haller has done well this season despite falling down the pecking order behind Luka Jovic. Kevin Prince-Boateng has been an important player this season with Marius Wolf a revelation.
Match Up
Bayern have predictably dominated Frankfurt, unbeaten in their last 14 matches with 11 victories. The Bavarians won both Bundesliga encounters this season, a 1-0 win in Frankfurt courtesy of Arturo Vidal and a 4-1 win at home three weeks ago despite Heynckes fielding a host of debutants.
Despite contending with various injuries, Bayern have superior depth and can call on a host of world class talent to fill the gaps. Frankfurt missed a great opportunity to beat an understrength Bayern side last time out, coming away with a demoralising 4-1 defeat.
Key Statistics
- Bayern Munich are undefeated against Eintracht Frankfurt in the last 14 matches (Bundesliga).
- Bayern Munich have won 11 of the last 14 matches against Eintracht Frankfurt (Bundesliga).
- Bayern Munich have scored 20 goals in 5 matches this season (DFB-Pokal).
- Eintracht Frankfurt have lost 5 of their last 7 matches (Bundesliga).
Verdict
Bayern Munich crushed Frankfurt 4-1 three weeks ago with an under strength team. It's extremely unlikely Frankfurt can turn it around now.
Jupp Heynckes will almost certainly go out a winner, the only real question is how big the margin will be, and how many Lewandowski will score.
