Schalke vs Werder Bremen Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
Schalke have a tough job ahead as they host Werder Bremen in the German Cup quarter-finals.
Werder Bremen have won their last two matches at the Veltins-Arena and are great value to make it three. Captain and talisman Max Kruse is in sensational form and can continue his goal scoring form against Schalke’s shaky defence.
FC Schalke 04 Form & Team News
The Royal Blues secured an important 1-0 win at basement club Hannover on Sunday. The win snapped a six game losing streak, Suat Serdar scoring the winner which inches the club away from the Bundesliga relegation zone.
It was an unconvincing win as Hannover came home strong but were unable to score an equaliser. Schalke will take the points anyway they can get them at the moment in what has been nothing short of a horror season.
Experienced manager Huub Stevens trying to pick up the pieces after previous boss Domenico Tedesco was sacked. The squad was badly assembled with injuries to Alessandro Schöpf, Daniel Caligiuri, Weston McKennie not helping matters along with Nabil Bentaleb excluded for disciplinary issues.
Caligiuri and McKennie have been Schalke’s best performers this season and their absences have come at the worst possible time.
SV Werder Bremen Form & Team News
The Green-Whites remain unbeaten in 11 matches in 2019 including three straight wins. The 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen was followed up by a 3-1 home win against Mainz on Saturday which puts the club into the top six.
It was the Max Kruse and Milot Rashica show once again against Mainz, Kruse scoring twice and adding an assist for Rashica’s opener. Kruse has now scored six goals and added four assists in his last five matches, Rashica scoring four goals with one assist in his last three matches.
Florian Kohfeldt’s side are missing forwards Claudio Pizarro and Yuya Osako through injury. Philipp Bargfrede missed the Mainz match but could return here with Nuri Sahin an option as he returns from suspension.
Schalke vs Werder Bremen Head-to-Head
There is little separating these clubs since 1963 but Werder Bremen have dominated recent matches. Werder Bremen have won their previous two matches in Schalke 2-1 and 2-0.
The last meeting was a Bundesliga match in March, Bremen too strong in a 4-2 win at the Weserstadion. Breel Embolo scored twice for Schalke but they were ultimately overpowered, Milot Rashica bagging a brace with Max Kruse and Martin Harnik also on the score sheet.
Schalke vs Werder Bremen Match Up
Confidence is still low at Schalke despite the 1-0 win at Hannover. New manager Huub Stevens is working with a limited squad who will find it tough against a Bremen side that are on fire.
Werder Bremen are flying with Max Kruse and Milot Rashica combining to lethal effect. They were the main instigators in the 4-2 win a month ago and I expect them to be too strong for Schalke’s brittle backline.
Schalke vs Werder Bremen Key Statistics
- Schalke have lost 6 of their last 7 matches (all competitions).
- Schalke have failed to score in their last 4 home Bundesliga matches.
- Werder Bremen have scored 3+ goals in their 3 Bundesliga matches.
- Werder Bremen’s Max Kruse has 6 goals and 4 four assists in his last 5 matches (Bundesliga).
- Werder Bremen’s Milot Rashica has scored 4 goals in his last 3 matches (Bundesliga).
- Werder Bremen have won their last 3 matches against Schalke (Bundesliga).
Werder Bremen are playing at a much higher level than Schalke. The visitors have won their last two matches in Gelsenkirchen and Max Kruse can make the difference once again.
It makes no sense that Schalke are slight favourites for this match. The value is on Werder Bremen to make it four straight wins against Schalke and advance to the DFB-Pokal semi-finals.
