Hungarian NB I History
The first championship took place in 1901 with only five teams participating – BTC, MUE, FTC, Muegyetemi AFC and Budapesti SC. The latter took the title in the inaugural season.
Over the years many clubs have gone through dominant stages including Ferencvarios and MTK in the 1910s and 1920s. Other teams took over the mantle as the decades went by and in 1982 when Gyor won the championship they become the first winners from outside of the capital, Budapest.
The collapse of communism cost Hungarian football dearly. They suffered severe financial losses and those effects are still being felt today. The Bosman ruling cost them as well when foreign teams could invest heavily in football clubs while Hungarian sides were left to groom home grown players.
Rural clubs started to take the mantle of champions in the 2000s when Zalagerszeg won the championship in 2002. Debrecen won the Hungarian NB I for five consecutive years between 2005 and 2010. MTK won it in 2008.
