Brazil vs Argentina Predictions

With both nations keen to avoid back-to-back qualification defeats, I expect a somewhat tense affair with little to choose between these great rivals.

Recent contests between Brazil and Argentina have been edgy, and I´m banking on something similar in Rio. As such, under 2.5 goals is my primary selection, with a low-scoring draw potentially on the cards.

  • Brazil have seen under 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 matches
  • Brazil have seen under 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 9 matches against Argentina
  • Argentina have drawn 3 of their last 5 matches against Brazil (World Cup qualifiers)
  • Argentina have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches

Head to Head

Brazil has the historical advantage in their H2H record against Argentina. The Selecao have won 46 and lost 41 of all previous matches against their great rivals.

Both nations have won three of their last seven meetings over the past seven years, while their most recent contest finished as a 0-0 draw in San Juan two years ago.

Brazil Form

Brazil´s recent troubles worsened in Barranquilla last week after a surprise 2-1 defeat against Colombia. Conceding twice in the closing stages after Gabriel Martinelli´s early opener, Brazil slumped to their first loss against the Colombians since 2015.

Fernando Diniz´s side have now taken just one point from their last three qualification matches. However, the Selecao have a sensational home record in World Cup qualification, with no defeats in any of 46 matches played this century (W36, D10).

Brazil Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Alisson, Bento, Lucas Perri
Defenders: Marquinhos (vice-captain), Renan Lodi, Emerson Royal, Gabriel Magalhães, Bremer, Carlos Augusto, Nino
Midfielders: Bruno Guimarães, Douglas Luiz, Raphael Veiga, Joelinton, André
Forwards: Gabriel Jesus, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, Raphinha, Gabriel Martinelli, Endrick, João Pedro, Paulinho, Pepê

Temporary boss Diniz has several key players unavailable due to fitness concerns. Vincious Jnr is the latest casualty having suffered a hamstring injury in the defeat against Colombia. Joao Pedro could replace the Real Madrid forward.

In addition, Diniz is unable to call on regulars Ederson, Danilo, Eder Militao, Casemiro, Neymar, and Richarlison.

Argentina Form

Argentina´s superb unbeaten run was brought to a shuddering halt with a shock 2-0 home reversal against Uruguay last week. Despite that setback, the world champions remain top of the South American qualification section.

Prior to Thursday´s defeat, La Albiceleste had kept clean sheets in eight successive victories since their World Cup triumph against France last December.

Lionel Scaloni´s side are unbeaten in their last 12 away World Cup qualification contests (W8, D4).

Argentina Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers:Franco Armani, Walter Benítez, Emiliano Martínez, Juan Musso
Defenders: Nahuel Molina, Lucas Martínez Quarta, Nicolás Tagliafico, Gonzalo Montiel, Germán Pezzella, Marcos Acuña, Cristian Romero, Nicolás Otamendi, Pablo Maffeo, Francisco Ortega
Midfielders: Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Giovani Lo Celso, Exequiel Palacios, Enzo Fernández, Guido Rodríguez, Alexis Mac Allister
Forwards: Ángel Di María (vice-captain), Paulo Dybala, Julián Álvarez, Lionel Messi (captain), Nicolás González, Lucas Ocampos, Lautaro Martínez

Argentine boss Scaloni seems likely to make changes to his selection after Thursday´s poor performance against Uruguay. Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Marcos Acuno are among those likely to earn a recall to the Albiceleste selection.

Lionel Messi is set to earn his 180th cap after failing to score for only the third time in his last 18 appearances.

Verdict

After shock defeats on matchday five, both nations will be keen to avoid further setbacks on Tuesday.

Given the tight nature of recent matches between these rivals, I expect another low-scoring stalemate, so I´m taking under 2.5 goals as my primary pick in Rio.
