France vs Iceland Match Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

France are heavy favourites as they take on Iceland in a friendly match in Guingamp on Thursday. The World Cup champions offer no value in the win market, but Kylian Mbappé is on fire and can keep his goal scoring run going here.

France Form & Team News

Les Bleus are still on a high from winning the 2018 World Cup in Russia and are undefeated in their last 13 matches. France have played two matches in the UEFA Nations League, a 0-0 draw in Germany and a 2-1 win against the Netherlands in Paris.

Kylian Mbappé scored the opener and Oliver Giroud scored the winner in Paris after Ryan Babel’s equaliser. Manager Didier Deschamps has called up Dimitri Payet with Nabil Fekir injured while Mamadou Sakho, Kurt Zouma and Lucas Digne all join the squad.

Mbappé is realising his potential and is in some breathtaking form. The 19-year-old scored four goals for PSG as they beat Lyon 5-0 on Sunday, taking his tally to 12 goals and four assists in his last 10 games for club and country.

Iceland Form & Team News

The feel good factor around Iceland has disappeared dramatically after qualifying for the last two major international tournaments. Getting to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals was a success as was the tiny island nation qualifying for their first World Cup in Russia.

It didn’t go well however, a 1-1 draw against Argentina followed by defeats against Nigeria and Iceland as they failed to get out of the group stage. Manager Heimir Hallgrímsson resigned after the tournament and was replaced by Erik Hamrén.

Hamrén has had two games in charge, a 6-0 friendly loss against Switzerland and a 3-0 home defeat against Belgium to start their UEFA Nations League campaign. Much of their success rests on the form of attacking midfielder and captain Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson is in great form for Everton, scoring four goals in four games for the Premier League club including a stunning winner at Leicester on Saturday.

Head-to-Head

These nations have met 12 times with France defeating Iceland on nine occasions with three draws. France have won all seven games at home with the last coming in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

France won comfortably at the Stade de France, Oliver Giroud, Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann scoring before half-time in a routine 5-2 victory.

Match Up

France are flying and should have too much quality for an Iceland side trying to rebuild under a new manager. Les Bleus will dominate this match and the only factor in Iceland’s favour is that France could be looking ahead to their upcoming UEFA Nations League match against Germany on Tuesday.

Heimir Hallgrímsson has had two games in charge, both heavy defeats, and will no doubt stick with a defensive formation including Ragnar Sigurdsson, Sverrir Ingi Ingason and Hördur Magnússon in a back three. However, it’s unlikely to be enough to stop Kylian Mbappé who is in great form.

Key Statistics

Verdict

It’s tough to find value here with France incredibly short at 1.20 in the win market. We turn then to Kylian Mbappé who has scored 12 goals in his last 10 games for club and country.

Despite being a friendly, Mbappé can add to his tally before being rested in the second half in preparation for the Germany.
