United States vs Colombia Match Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The United States have a tough job ahead of them as they host Colombia in an international friendly in Florida. The match at the Raymond James Stadium is expected to be a comfortable win for the South Americans with the US missing their star players.

United States

The United States were beaten 2-0 by Brazil in New Jersey but bounced back with a 1-0 win against Mexico in Nashville, Tennessee. Tyler Adams scored in the 71st minute as Dave Sarachan’s side continue to look to the future with a young squad.

18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker Timothy Weah, Schalke’s 20-year-old Weston McKennie and 19-year-old scorer Adams all started against Mexico but miss out against Colombia due to injury. In addition, USA’s best player Christian Pulisic is also injured.

Bobby Wood should be confident after heading in two goals in Hannover’s 3-1 win against Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Three defenders have been called up for the first time in Reggie Cannon, Aaron Long and Ben Sweat. 19-year-old winger Jonathan Amon also gets a debut call up after some good performances for Denmark club Nordsjælland.

Colombia

The Tricolors are adjusting to life with a new manager after an ultimately disappointing 2018 World Cup campaign. An opening defeat to Japan was followed by wins against Poland and Senegal but Colombia were knocked out by England in the round of 16.

José Pekerman was in charge for over six years but let his contract run out after two World Cups with the team. Colombia's interim coach Arturo Reyes has had two games in charge, a 2-1 win against Venezuela in Florida and a tough 0-0 draw against Argentina in New Jersey.

Reyes has named four uncapped players including Watford’s Cucho Hernández who is on loan at Huesca. The stars in the side include Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado and Davinson Sanchez.

Head-to-Head

These nations have met 19 times with Colombia winning 12 encounters. The South Americans have won the last three meetings and kept a clean sheet in four of their last five.

Their previous two encounters were at Copa America 2016 with Colombia winning 2-0 and 1-0.

Match Up

A youthful US side face Colombia without some key players including Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and their best player Christian Pulisic.

Colombia are playing their third consecutive friendly on American soil and have enough class to get the win. I expect James Rodriguez to run the show here and be the catalyst with Davinson Sanchez too strong at the back.

Key Statistics

  • United States have lost their last 3 matches against Colombia (All competitions).

Verdict

The Unites States are missing their best players against a very talented Colombia team hungry under a new manager. James Rodriguez is the class player here and he will dominate the match.

The US have struggled to score against Colombia in recent years and it should be no different here with Davinson Sanchez marshalling the defence.
