Wales vs Spain Match Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Wales face Spain in a friendly match at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff with Gareth Bale ruled out foe the hosts. An open and attacking game is predicted so over 2.5 goals is the tip in what should be an exciting match.

Wales

Wales failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup despite losing only one of their 10 qualification games. Ryan Giggs replaced Chris Coleman as manager in January and has had some mixed results since taking over.

A thumping 6-0 win against China was followed by a 1-0 loss against Uruguay and a 0-0 draw against Mexico. Wales began their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 4-1 home win against the Republic of Ireland and a 2-0 defeat in Denmark.

Experienced Premier League players Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen will control the midfield with Sam Vokes up front. Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale scored three goals against China to take his Wales tall to 30 goals in 72 appearances but has been ruled out of this match.

18-year-old Chelsea central defender Ethan Ampadu started the last two games alongside 20-year-old Chris Mepham. Will Giggs persevere with the youngsters?

Spain

Luis Enrique has been in charge since July after the disastrous World Cup campaign in Russia. The former Barcelona manager has guided Spain to two wins in the UEFA Nations League to get his reign off to a solid start.

Spain fell behind against England at Wembley but won 2-1 thanks to goals from Saúl and Rodrigo. The match against Croatia in Elche was a procession, a 6-0 thrashing with Saúl, Marco Asensio, Rodrigo, Sergio Ramos and Isco on the score sheet.

It’s a new age for Spain after the retirements of Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta and David Silva. Wolves left-back Jonny has been called up for the first time and 33-year-old Raúl Albiol has earned a recall.

Paco Alcácer comes into contention after a sensational run at Borussia Dortmund where he has scored seven goals in his last four appearances.

Head-to-Head

These nations last met in the 1986 World Cup qualifiers, Spain winning both legs 3-0.

Match Up

Wales have experience in midfield with Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen running the show but could get over run by Spain's superior depth.

Spain are rebuilding at the moment but a 6-0 thrashing of World Cup finalists Croatia will provide confidence. La Roja have plenty of world class talent in midfield, in attack Luis Enrique has options with Paco Alcacer in contention.

Key Statistics

  • Wales have scored in 12 of their last 13 home matches (All competitions).
  • Spain are unbeaten in their last 26 matches in all competitions.
  • Spain have scored 2 or more goals in 4 of their last 6 matches in all competitions.
  • Spain’s Paco Alcácer has scored 7 goals in his last 4 matches for Borussia Dortmund (All competitions).

Verdict

Wales are severely depleted without Gareth Bale in their ranks. Spain smashed six past Croatia and can hurt Wales from all over the pitch. I expect an open game here.
