Israeli Premier League History

The first football competition was called the Palestine League which was held from 1931 to 1947. The inaugural Palestine League title was won by British Police who finished the season unbeaten.

Following Israel's creation in 1948, the Israeli League ran from 1949-1951 and the cup was renamed the Israel State Cup. A new top division began in the 1951-52 season which was renamed Liga Alef.

Liga Alef became the second tier of Israeli football in 1955-56 when it was superseded by Liga Leumit. The Liga Leumit ran until 1999 when the Israeli Premier League was formed.

When the Israeli Premier League became the top division of Israeli football, Liga Leumit became the second division. Since then six clubs have won the title.

Hapoel Tel Aviv, Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem are have dominated the competition and are known as the "Big Four" of Israeli football.
