Japan vs Spain Preview

Japan’s performances have been impressive so far, ending the group stages with three wins and a 7-0 goal difference. Spain struggled in two of their three games, so I see good value in backing the Asian side with a double chance.

  • Japan are unbeaten in their last 8 matches.
  • Spain are winless in 2 of their last 4 matches.

Head to Head

This is going to be the third head to head encounter between Japan and Spain at the Olympics.

Japan won the first meeting 1-0 in 2012, while Spain returned the favor with the same result in August 2021.

Japan Form

Japan demonstrated great form in the first phase, winning all three games in the group stages without conceding a single goal. They kicked things off with a commanding 5-0 win over Paraguay, Shunsuke Mito and Shota Fujio scoring two goals each, Rihito Yamamoto also on target.

Yamamoto was the hero in the second round, scoring the only goal against Mali in the 82nd minute.

The Samurai Blue wrapped up the group stages with another narrow 1-0 victory, this time against Israel Mao Hosoya finding the net in stoppage time.

Spain Form

Spain opened the Olympics 2024 tournament with a tight tussle and a 2-1 victory against underdog Uzbekistan, Marc Pubill breaking the deadlock in 28th minute, conceding a goal 17 minutes later. Sergio Gomez set the final score in 62nd minute.

The Red Fury looked much better in their second appearance, dispatching Dominican Republic 3-1, Fermin Lopez, Alex Baena and Miguel Gutierrez on target.

They were denied 1st place in the group after losing to Egypt 2-1 in the final round.

Verdict

Spain’s performances have been far from impressive in the group stages, while Japan claimed three straight victories. I will back the Asian side to either win this match or hold La Roja to a draw in regular time.
