French Ligue 2 History
Ligue 2 as we currently know it was created as Division 2 in 1933, one year after the creation of Division 1 in 1932. The inaugural season consisted of six clubs including Strasbourg, RC Roubaix, and Amiens SC.
In 1934 the second division contained 23 clubs - 14 in the Nord section and nine in the Sud section. The winners of each group faced each other to determine which club would earn promotion to Ligue 1.
On 20 May 1934 Red Star Saint-Ouen faced Olympique Alès with Red Star emerging victorious 3-2. Red Star were thus crowned the Division 2 champions and promoted to the first division, Alès were also promoted to the first division alongside Strasbourg and Mulhouse who each won a pool championship after the first division expanded to 16 teams.
The second division became a 16 team league in 1934 and adopted a single table instead of two sections. The league increased to 19 clubs and then 25 clubs that were divided into four groups.
Following World War II, the second division combined professional and amateur clubs and allowed amateur clubs to become professional if they met certain standards. In 2002 the Division 2 changed its name to Ligue 2.
