San Jose Earthquake vs New England Revolution Preview & Betting Tips

San Jose Earthquake host the New England Revolution at the Avaya Stadium in California on Thursday. The Earthquake are looking to stem the tide of recent defeats, while the Revolution will be hoping to hold on to their playoff place.

San Jose Earthquake

San Jose suffered a disappointing 4-3 defeat to Los Angeles FC in their last match on Sunday. An early strike from Vako Qazaishvili and a Chris Wondolowski brace was not enough as they succumbed to an injury time winner from Los Angeles.

The Earthquake are 11th in the Western Conference, just one point above bottom side Colorado Rapids. They have lost nine of their opening 13 matches this season, scoring 22 goals and conceding 29.

The California based outfit has struggled for form in recent weeks, having lost their last four MLS outings. They conceded 13 goals in that run and have not scored more than once in each of those matches.

Mikael Stahre’s team will be without Kevin Partida, who was shown a red card deep into added time last Sunday. However, Qazaishvili, Wondolowski and Danny Hoesen are all set to start, while Yeffersson Quintana and Jimmy Ockford are all in line to feature.

New England Revolution

New England were held to a 1-1 draw away at Chicago Fire last time out. They were made to come from behind as Teal Bunbury’s 82nd minute strike cancelled out the away side’s first half opener.

The Revolution are currently fifth on the table, five points above Chicago who are just outside the playoff places. They have claimed six wins in 13 matches this season, losing just four.

The Revs come into this clash on the back of just a solitary defeat in their last five outings. However, three of those matches have ended in draws, while their only victory in that run was a 2-1 triumph over New York Red Bull.

Defender Claude Dielna is suspended for the clash, while Isaac Angking and Chris Tierney are both ruled out with varying health problems. Bunbury will continue in attack after scoring in each of his last four appearances, while Diego Fagundez and Cristian Penilla are both in contention to start.

Match-Up

San Jose and New England played out a goalless draw in their last meeting back in 2017. The visitors have won three of the last five matches between the two, while also keeping three clean sheets in that run.

Both teams are excellent going forward, while being far too open at the back. New England have shown a bit more defensive solidity this season with the likes of Antonio Dalamea and Jalil Anibaba, and they will be confident of shutting out the San Jose attack.
