Former Barcelona boss Xavi is the bookmakers’ favourite to become the next Manchester United manager, after the club finally sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday.
Ten Hag came into the 2024/25 season under a huge amount of pressure, but was unable to ease that during their first nine league games.
The Red Devils won just three times and scored only eight goals, with Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham proving to be the final straw.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” the club announced.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
Van Nistelrooy is considered a leading candidate for the role at 5/2 with bet365, but the current front-runner is ex-Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi.
The former midfielder is the 3/1 favourite with the bookie, having left Barcelona back in May.
Germany national team boss Julian Nagelsmann and ex-England coach Gareth Southgate are next up at 5/1, with Ruben Amorim now out to 7/1 for the role.
