Enugu Rangers v Kwara United Preview & Tips: Hosts look to heap more misery on bottom club.

Enugu Rangers will be expecting a big win as they welcome bottom club Kwara United to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium

Enugu Rangers entertain bottom club Kwara United at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday with the hosts three points off a CAF Champions League spot. The newly promoted visitors are languishing at the foot of the table and need to start picking up points in order to prevent relegation.

Enugu Rangers

Following a run of just one defeat in five games, Rangers have risen to 7th on the league. The Enugu side appear to have recovered from their early season slump and are only three points off second place in the league.

Rangers’ recent good form has been built on stellar home form which has seen them win five and draw one of the last six games at the Cathedral.

Ifeanyi George and Bright Silas are the team’s top scorers with three goals each while Godwin Aguda remains the fulcrum of the team. The midfielder dictates the play for Rangers and has also contributed two goals this season. His vision and creativity will be key when Kwara come visiting.

Kwara United

Kwara have struggled on their return to the top flight, sitting bottom of the table having suffered seven defeats in 14 games. Manager John Obuh paid the price for the club’s poor form earlier in the season and things appear to be looking up in Ilorin. Kwara are now unbeaten in three matches since Abubakar Bala took charge, a run which includes a 2-1 win over second-placed Kano Pillars.

Goals have been hard to come by for the newly promoted side with just 12 scored so far, six of which have come from the boots of Stephen Alfred. The striker will be the go-to guy for the Harmony boys.

The teams recent 2-2 draw in Akure against fellow strugglers Sunshine proved that the change of manager has not only improved their home form but they are now showing positive signs on the road.

Match Up

With Alfred accounting for a bulk of Kwara’s goals this season, he could find himself being cut off and isolated up front as new manager Abubakar Bala favours a packed midfield operating with a lone forward.

In contrast, Rangers spread their goals across the team with midfielders Ajani Ibrahim, Chiamaka Madu and Kelvin Itoya all off the mark this year.

Coach Gbenga Ogunbote has often blamed the state of pitches for some of the team’s poor away day performances but has no excuses for a home game against the bottom club on the lush green turf at the Cathedral.

Verdict

Rangers do their best work in front of their home support, with Enyimba, Rivers United and Elkanemi Warriors all falling at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium in recent weeks. Kwara are winless on their travels this season and should join the list on Sunday.
