Polish Ekstraklasa History
The
Polish Ekstraklasa was founded as the I liga in 1927. The first national non-league football championship in Poland took place in 1920.
Cracovia entered the league in 1928 with the 1927-1932 period dominated by teams from Kraków. In 1933 and 1934 there were 12 clubs in the league which was cut to 10 in 1936.
After World War II the borders of Poland changed which saw clubs cease to exist. New clubs were formed in former German territory in particular in Silesia.
Górnik Zabrze emerged as the dominant club in the 1960's and again in the mid 1980s. Wisła Kraków won four of five titles between 2001 and 2005 with Legia Warsaw becoming the dominant force.
Legia Warsaw won five of six Polish Ekstraklasa titles between 2013 and 2018 to move to 13 titles, equal with Wisła Kraków and one behind Górnik Zabrze and Ruch Chorzów.
