Benfica Form

Benfica find themselves three points off top spot in the Primeira Liga. The Lisbon club won 2-0 at home against Tondela and 4-0 at Estrela in the Portuguese Cup.

Jorge Jesus’ side took on Porto where they came away with a 1-1 draw at the Dragao. Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring but they couldn’t capitalise after Porto were reduced to 10 men in the 73rd minute.

Benfica suffered a 2-1 defeat against Braga in the League Cup semi-finals. Pizzi equalised from the penalty spot but it wasn’t enough in Leiria.

Benfica’s last match was a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Nacional on Monday. Chiquinho opened the scoring but they couldn’t hold on.

Benfica recently suffered a corona virus outbreak. Goalkeepers Odysseas Vlachodimos and Helton Leite tested positive with Mile Svilar to continue in goal.

Defenders Jan Vertonghen, Nicolás Otamendi, Gilberto, Nuno Tavares and Alejandro Grimaldo were also affected. Expect Jardel to partner Ferro in central defence with João Ferreira and Cervi in the full back positions.

Expect Jesus to hand starts to centre back Jean-Clair Todibo, midfielder Adel Taarabt, winger Pedrinho and striker Goncalo Ramos.

Belenenses Form

Belenenses are in a relegation battle after winning three of their opening 14 Primeira Liga matches.

They lost 2-1 at home to Sporting CP before a 0-0 draw at Gil Vicente. Petit’s side lost 2-0 at home against Pacos de Ferreira.

Belenenses then suffered a scare at Fafe in the Portuguese Cup. They were 2-0 down but two late Miguel Cardoso penalties took it to extra time where Francisco Teixeira scored the winner in the 120th minute.

Belenenses returned to the Primeira Liga with a 1-0 defeat at Portimonense where Henrique was sent off in the 67th minute.

The Lisbon club took all three points in a 2-0 home win against Tondela on Monday. They went into half time 2-0 up thanks to Mateo Cassierra and Tiago Esgaio, were under heavy pressure in the second half but held on.
