Benfica and Porto square off in the Portuguese Cup final on Saturday. These clubs have been dominating football in Portugal for over a decade with a close contest expected at Estádio EFAPEL in Coimbra.

Benfica Form

Benfica threw away a seven point lead in the Primeira Liga, finishing second, five points behind Porto. Manager Bruno Lage was sacked after two straight defeats ended their title hopes.

Nélson Veríssimo took over and steered the Eagles to four wins and a draw in Benfica’s final five league games of the season. Jorge Jesus has been hired as their new manager and will return to the club on 8 August.

Benfica won 3-1 against Boavista and drew 1-1 at Famalicao. They responded with a 2-0 win against Vitoria Guimaraes and 4-0 win at Aves.

Their last match was a 2-1 win against Sporting CP. Haris Seferovic scored the opener at the Estádio da Luz with Carlos Vinicius coming off the bench to score a late winner.

Benfica Team News

Left-back Alejandro Grimaldo and midfielder Adel Taarabt are injured. Nuno Tavares missed the Sporting match with a thigh injury with Tomás Tavares ready to start at left-back.

Porto Form

Porto overcame a seven point deficit to finish five points clear of Benfica and win the Primeira Liga. The Dragons won six of their final seven matches.

Sérgio Conceição’s side won 3-1 at Tondela, 2-0 against Sporting CP and 6-1 against Moreirense. Porto finished with a 2-1 defeat at Braga despite Mateus Uribe opening the scoring in the 6th minute.

Porto Team News

Centre-back Iván Marcano remains out injured. Midfielder Mateus Uribe was carried off in Braga and is unlikely to feature here with winger Luis Díaz also doubtful.

Benfica vs Porto Head to Head

Porto have a 95-88 advantage against Benfica with 60 draws in 243 matches. Porto won both matches in the Primeira Liga this season, 2-0 in Lisbon and 3-2 at home.

Benfica threw away the Primeira Liga title after looking unstoppable in the first half of the season. They have looked more like their usual selves since Bruno Lage was replaced and will be eager to impress new manager Jorge Jesus.

Porto won the title but were uninspiring for large parts of the season. The Dragons lost three matches against Braga and were no match for Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League.
