The Portuguese Segunda Liga inaugurated in the 1990/91 season. It was first known as the Segunda Divisao de Honra before changing its name to Segunda Liga as it came under the control of Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional.

Since the 2018/19 season the Portuguese Segunda Liga has been contested nationwide with 18 participating teams. These teams include reserve sides from a number of top-flight clubs.
