Benfica vs Sporting CP Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
The Lisbon derby moves south to the Algarve as Benfica take on Sporting CP in the Portuguese Super Cup. The Eagles have a significant form advantage and can secure victory at the Estádio Do Algarve.
SL Benfica Form & Team News
Benfica are aiming to go back to back in the Primeira Liga after finishing two points ahead of Porto last season. A win in the Portuguese Super Cup would be a great start and their form is positive coming into the clash.
The Eagles have won four pre-season matches in a row and kept three clean sheets in the process. Manager Bruno Lage has integrated his new signings well after Jonas’ retirement and the departures of Eduardo Salvio and João Félix.
Young right-back Nuno Tavares has seen plenty of playing time, winger Caio has featured heavily and Spanish striker Raúl de Tomás has had time to build a partnership with Haris Seferovic. Brazilian striker Carlos Vinícius was bought from Napoli for €17 million and waits for his chance.
Benfica can be backed at 2.20 to beat Sporting which offers value. Bruno Lage hasn’t made many changes throughout pre-season which should serve them well against the Lions.
Sporting Clube de Portugal Form & Team News
Sporting CP haven’t won the Primeira Liga since 2001-02 after falling behind Benfica and Porto. The Lions finished 13 points behind Benfica last season with manager Marcel Keizer doing well after replacing José Peseiro in November.
Much of their success was due to Bruno Fernandes with the attacking midfielder scoring 20 goals and adding 13 assists in the league. With Fernandes being heavily linked to Manchester United, his involvement in the Super Cup is doubtful.
Sporting CP were unable to win any of their five pre-season matches, defeated against Rapperswil-Jona and Valencia with 2-2 draws against St. Gallen, Club Brugge and Liverpool. The Lisbon club haven’t lost any influential players yet and made some interesting signings.
Central defender Luís Neto arrives from Zenit St. Petersburg, holding midfielder Eduardo Henrique arrives from Internacional and right-back Valentin Rosier was signed from Dijon. 19-year-old winger Rafael Camacho was signed from Liverpool and striker Luciano Vietto joins from Atletico Madrid.
Marcel Keizer might need more time to figure out his best starting XI with so many similar options across the pitch. Sporting are outsiders and can be backed at 3.40 with a draw paying 3.30, a result that has happened in four of the last seven meetings between these clubs.
Benfica vs Sporting CP Head to Head
Benfica have a 30-17 advantage against Sporting CP with 18 draws in the last 65 encounters. Sporting snapped an eight game run without a win against Benfica in the last meeting, a 1-0 victory in the 2nd leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals with Bruno Fernandes scoring the winner.
Benfica vs Sporting CP Match Up
Benfica have integrated their new signings well as they move on from the sensational season from João Félix. They have spent some of the €126 million Atletico Madrid paid for Félix wisely and have made minimal changes to a winning team.
Sporting CP have questions surrounding the availability of Bruno Fernandes. Even is he does play, his mind might be elsewhere as he nears a big money move to Manchester United. The Lions’ pre-season form has been poor and this match might come too soon.
