Russian Premier League History
The competition has origins in the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, starting as the Russian Top Division in 1992 with 20 teams before being reduced to a 16 team competition in 1994. Every season since has been with 16 teams bar and experiment of adding two more teams in 1996 and 1997.
It was known as the Russian Top Division until 2002 when it became the Russian Premier League.
Spartak Moscow dominated the league during the 90s but Lokomotiv Moscow and CSKA Moscow started to take over in the early 2000s. To break the monopoly of Moscow clubs, Zenit Saint Petersburg came onto the scene along with Rubin Kazan in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Rubin Kazan won their first title in 2008 to become the first team to win the title having not competed in the Soviet Top League pre-1992.
