Rubin Kazan vs Zenit St Petersburg Preview & Betting Tips

Rubin Kazan host Zenit St Petersburg at the Kazan Arena in Matchday 3 of the Russian Premier League on Monday. The home side are without several influential players, Zenit might have their mind on damage limitation with a crucial Europa League match on Thursday.

Rubin Kazan

The 2008 and 2009 Russian Premier League champions are trying to climb back into contention after three consecutive mid-table finishes. The Red-Greens have started the season well with a win and a draw from their opening two matches.

Sardar Azmoun bagged both goals in a 2-1 win against FC Krasnodar before a 1-1 draw at Dinamo Moscow with Dmitriy Poloz grabbing the equaliser. However, manager Kurban Berdyev has some important players missing for the visit of Zenit.

Defenders Vladimir Granat and Fedor Kudryashov are unfit after featuring for Russia at the World Cup. Poloz and Ibragim Tsallagov are on loan from FC Zenit and can’t feature, while star man Azmoun lasted 19 minutes at Dinamo and is a doubt.

Zenit St Petersburg

Zenit started the domestic campaign with two wins without conceding a goal. Artem Dzyuba and Daler Kuzyaev were on target in a 2-0 win at FC Yenisey Krasnoyarsk before Oleg Shatov’s goal was enough in a 1-0 win against Arsenal Tula.

New manager Sergey Semak’s honeymoon period well and truly came to an end midweek with a heavy loss in the Europa League. The short trip to Belarus ended in horror as Dinamo Minsk won 4-0 in the 1st leg to put the Russian club on the brink of an early exit.

Semak will be without long term casualties Aleksandr Kokorin and Emanuel Mammana for another month while Yuri Zhirkov will also miss Monday’s visit to Kazan due to injury.

Little has separated these clubs since Rubin Kazan joined the Russian Premier League in 2003. In 15 matches played in Kazan, there have been five wins for both clubs and five draws.

Zenit have won five of the last six meetings, but the previous clash in Kazan last November ended in a goalless draw with neither side able to break the deadlock .

Key Statistics

  • Rubin Kazan have drawn 2 of their last 3 home matches (Russian Premier League).
  • Zenit St Petersburg have drawn 8 of their last 14 away matches (Russian Premier League).
  • The last match between Rubin Kazan and Zenit St Petersburg finished 0-0 (Russian Premier League).

Both clubs are undefeated in the Russian Premier League but have doubts coming into this match.

Rubin are missing key players while Zenit are hurting after a 4-0 thrashing in the Europa League. The visitors are slight favourites but a draw could be on the cards in Kazan.
