Betting on Scottish League Cup
The group stage is often won by teams in the Premiership due to their superior financial capabilities compared with clubs in the lower divisions.
Home advantage can be a key factor in the knockout phase when the teams participating in UEFA club competitions enter the draw. In 2024-25 the home team won all eight matches in the Round of 16 and four quarter-finals.
The Old Firm dominate football in Scotland and the League Cup is no exception. Rangers are the most successful club in the competition, their 28 titles six more than Celtic who won their 22nd title in 2024-25.
Aberdeen are next best with six titles and Heart of Midlothian have won four League Cups. St Johnstone are the last team to disrupt the dominance of the Old Firm, claiming their first title in 2021.
Format
The competition begins with eight groups of five teams, the 40 teams consisting 38 league clubs who are not participating in UEFA competitions along with two teams from outside the league.
The groups are regionalised with four in the North section and four in the South section. Each group is seeded with one top seed, one second seed, and three unseeded clubs.
The eight group winners and three best runners-up progress to the Round of 16 where they are joined by the five clubs participating in UEFA competitions.
The semi-finals and final are traditionally played at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
