Scottish League Cup Format
The Scottish League Cup used to be a straightforward knockout competition but since 2016/17 it has become a group phase/knockout competition.
There are five teams per group and a total of eight groups. Each team plays the others in its group in a round robin format. The 38 teams that are not playing European competitions play in the group phase along with two non-league sides.
If a match ends in a draw it goes to a penalty shoot-out, even in the group stage. One point is given for a draw but the winner of the penalty shoot-out will get a bonus point i.e two points, while the loser gets the one point.
The eight group winners and the two best runner-up teams advance to the knockout round where the European qualified teams join. From hereon it is a single match knockout competition.
The winners advance through each stage. Generally the semi-finals are held at neutral grounds with the final historically held at Hampden Park, although there have been other host venues due to renovations.
