Scottish Premiership Previews, Predictions & Betting Tips
The Scottish Premiership is the top division of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). The competition originates from 1890 when the Scottish Football League was formed.
The Scottish Premiership was established in its current format in July 2013, following a merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League. The competition consists of 12 teams and runs from August until May and divided into two phases.
The first phase sees each club playing three matches against every other club. After each team has played 33 matches, the league splits into the second phase where the top six and bottom six clubs seperate into two groups. Each club plays a further five matches against each team in their own group.
Points achieved during the first phase of 33 matches are carried into the second phase, but clubs can't move out of their own section even if they achieve more or fewer points than a higher or lower ranked team. It's a unique and confusing system that has been questioned since its inception.
The team that accumulates the most points is declared the Scottish Premiership Champion and gains entry to the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. The teams that finish second and third enter the UEFA Europa League at the first qualifying round stage. The bottom club is relegated into the Scottish Championship and the club that finished second last enters a relegation playoff.
Scottish football has traditionally been dominated by Glasgow clubs Celtic and Rangers, known as the "Old Firm". The two bitter rivals have have claimed the majority of league titles in Scotland, with the last title won by another team coming in 1984-85 when Aberdeen were victorious.
The Old Firm rivarly was halted in 2012 when Rangers went into liquidation. Rangers were placed in the Third division in 2013 and hit with a one-year transfer ban, before climbing their way back up to the Scottish Premiership for the 2017-18 season.
Celtic have been completely dominant in recent years, the current Scottish Premiership Champions having won seven titles in a row since Rangers demise.
