Aberdeen vs Rangers Preview & Betting Tips

Aberdeen host Rangers at the Pittodrie Stadium in their opening match of the 2018-19 Scottish Premier League season. Both teams are considered the closest challengers to Celtic’s dominance in the top-flight and will hope to begin their campaign on a positive note.

The Dons head into the opening day of the season off the back of a 3-1 extra-time defeat to English club Burnley. Lewis Ferguson scored their only goal as they crashed out in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.

Despite finishing second last season, they were in the shadows of Champions Celtic for much of the campaign. They never offered a serious challenge to the Glasgow club and finished nine points off the pace.

Manager Derek McInnes will be hoping to make a positive start this term and will name a strong team for the visit of Rangers. Ferguson and Sam Cosgrove could start in attack while the likes of Niall McGinn, Chris Forrester and Graeme Shinnie are also expected to feature.

The Teddy Bears were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Croatian team Osijek in their previous outing on Thursday. Despite the result, they still progressed to the third round of qualifying for the Europa League thanks to a 1-0 win in the first leg.

Rangers finished third last season on their return to the top-flight. New manager Steven Gerrard remains unbeaten in his short time at the helm and will hope to carry that run into their league campaign.

Following their exertions in the Thursday night clash, it remains to be seen if Gerrard will make  changes to his team in a bid to keep things fresh. Scott Arfield and Jacob Murphy could be restored to the starting line-up while the likes of Nicola Katic, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos could also feature.

Aberdeen and Rangers have faced each other 75 times in the past with the Glasgow club claiming 47 wins while the Dons have been victorious just nine times. The hosts were also winless in two matches against the Glasgow club last season.

The most recent meeting between both teams was a league clash in the previous campaign which ended 1-1. Kenny McClean opened the scoring for Aberdeen with a 14th minute penalty before Ross McCrorie equalised for Rangers in the second half.

Rangers have been unbeaten since Gerrard took charge as manager having claimed four wins in six matches. They have also maintained an excellent defensive record with five clean sheets and one goal conceded in that run.

Aberdeen on the other hand have been poor at the back having conceded in each of their last five outings. They are likely to struggle against the likes of Coulibaly, Morelos and Ovie Ejaria.

Key Statistics

  • Aberdeen and Rangers have seen both teams score in 6 of their last 9 matches (Premier League).
  • Aberdeen have lost 5 of their last 7 matches against Rangers (Premier League).
  • Rangers have won 4 of their last 6 matches (All Competitions).

Rangers have a great record against Aberdeen and are the favourites heading into Sunday's clash. They may not keep a clean sheet but are likely to claim all three points at Pittodrie Stadium.

Best Bet: Both Teams to Score @ 1.78
Value Bet: Rangers Win and Over 2.5 goals @ 3.90
