Hearts vs Hibernian Predictions

Form usually goes out the window in the Edinburgh derby, but I am confident both teams will score on Boxing Day.

BTTS is my top pick at Tynecastle.

Stats

  • Hearts have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5 home matches
  • Hearts have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 6 home matches against Hibernian
  • Hibernian have seen BTTS in 6 of their last 8 matches

Head to Head

Hearts and Hibernian have faced each other on 80 occasions since 2000. Hearts secured 34 wins while Hibernian achieved 19 victories. Twenty-seven matches ended deadlocked.

Hearts Form

Hearts come into Thursday's contest after a morale-boosting 2-1 win against St. Johnstone on Sunday. Blair Spittal's second-half strike secured only a second victory in ten matches for the Jambos.

Despite an indifferent run of form, Hearts have avoided defeat in their last four matches at Tynecastle (W2, D2). However, a lack of clean sheets remains an issue in Edinburgh, with only three managed across their last 12 home fixtures.

Approaching the halfway point of the Premiership season, Neil Critchley's men remain in the relegation dogfight, just two points ahead of bottom-of-the-table St. Johnstone.

Hearts Team News

Hearts boss Critchley has four injury concerns ahead of Thursday's derby clash. Frankie Kent and Calem Nieuwenhof face late fitness tests while Gerald Taylor and Stephen Kingsley are expected to miss out.

Lawrence Shankland will continue to lead the Jambos attack despite netting just three goals this season.

Hibernian Form

Hibernian make the short trip to Tynecastle in high spirits after an impressive 3-1 road win at Aberdeen on Saturday. The high-scoring Hibees have now scored exactly three goals in four of their last five Premiership matches.

David Gray's side have certainly improved over the past month. Hibs have picked up ten points from a possible 15 since a 4-1 defeat at Dundee in November. Gray's men had failed to win any of their nine previous Premiership games before their recent uptick in form.

Away from home, the Hibees have had limited success in 2024, though. While they won two of their last three away fixtures, they had failed to win 15 of 16 previous road games since December 2023.

Hibernian Team News

Head coach Gray will assess the fitness of Marvin Ekpiteta, Rudi Molotnikov and Mykola Kuharevich ahead of Thursday's derby matchup. Kieron Bowie is a definite absentee for the visitors.

Verdict

Both sides have shown defensive vulnerability this season, and an entertaining derby seems likely to develop.

I'm putting my money on both teams to score at Tynecastle.
