Motherwell vs Celtic Predictions

Celtic should bounce back to winning form in a high-scoring contest at Fir Park.

I'm backing an away win with over 2.5 goals, while I also fancy both teams to score on Sunday.

Stats

  • Motherwell have seen over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 home matches
  • Motherwell lost 5 of their last 8 matches
  • Motherwell lost their last 10 home matches against Celtic
  • Celtic have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 7 matches against Motherwell
  • Celtic have seen over 2.5 goals in 9 of their last 11 matches against Motherwell
  • Celtic have seen over 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 10 matches

Head to Head

Motherwell and Celtic have met on 36 occasions over the past ten years. Celtic won 30 of those games while Motherwell triumphed just once, in 2015.

Motherwell Form

Motherwell return to Fir Park for their first home fixture following the shock resignation of head coach Stuart Kettlewell earlier this week. Winless in their last four matches, the Steelmen suffered back-to-back defeats against St Johnstone before fan abuse prompted the departure of the highly-regarded, now former boss.

A poor run of form over the past month or so has seen Motherwell lose five while winning just one of nine previous matches.

Despite their recent dip, the Steelmen remain 5th in the Premiership, with 31 points banked from 24 games played.

Motherwell Team News

Motherwell have a lengthy list of unavailable players this weekend. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, Aston Oxborough, Lennon Miller, Paul McGinn, Ross Callachan, Steve Seddon, and Zach Robinson are all ruled out this weekend.

Experienced midfielder Andy Halliday faces a late fitness test.

Celtic Form

Celtic return to domestic affairs after a dramatic Champions League defeat at Aston Villa on Wednesday. Having fought back from 2-0 down to level, the Hoops eventually fell to a 4-2 defeat on a night of great entertainment at Villa Park.

The Hoops have struggled to find much success in recent away fixtures. Brendan Rodgers's side failed to win five of their last six road games.

Despite recent disappointments, Celtic have secured a place in the Champions League playoff round, while they boast a 13 point lead at the summit of the Premiership.

Celtic Team News

Head coach Rodgers has no fresh injury issues to deal with on Sunday. Cameron Carter-Vickers and James Forrest remain sidelined, while new signing Jota is not ready to feature after his arrival from Rennes.

Adam Idah will spearhead the Celtic attack following the departure of Japanese forward Kyogo.

Verdict

Celtic should get back to winning ways, but Motherwell can score in a likely entertaining contest on Sunday.

An away win with over 2.5 goals is my first pick, with BTTS also on the cards at Fir Park.
