Checking the Scottish Premiership fixtures is essential with many clubs resting players due to competing in the Scottish FA Cup, Scottish League Cup, UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League.

Scottish Premiership Format


The Scottish Premiership features 12 clubs that play each other three times. After 33 matches, the league splits into two sections of six teams with each team playing each other in that section for a total of 38 matches.

The Scottish Premiership champions enter the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. The runners-up enter the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round.

The third and fourth placed clubs enter the UEFA Europa Conference League second qualifying round. The 11th placed club compete in the Premiership play-off final and the last placed club are relegated to the Scottish Championship.

The Scottish Football League (SFL) was established in 1890, running until 1998 with the Scottish Premier League (SPL) running from 1998 until 2013. 

The SPL and SFL merged in 2013 to form the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), which named the top division the Scottish Premiership.
