St. Johnstone vs Aberdeen Predictions

An in-form Aberdeen can kick off their Premiership campaign in style on Monday.

I'm backing the Dons to claim all three points at McDiarmid Park.

  • St. Johnstone lost 5 of their last 7 home matches (Premiership)
  • St. Johnstone lost 4 of their last 6 home matches against Aberdeen
  • Aberdeen won their last 4 matches
  • Aberdeen won 5 of their last 7 away matches

Head to Head

St. Johnstone and Aberdeen have faced each other in 37 competitive fixtures over the past ten years. Aberdeen won 17 of those games, while the Saints claimed victory on ten occasions.

Aberdeen edged to a narrow 1-0 win when these sides last faced off in May.

St. Johnstone Form

St Johnstone face their first Premiership fixture of the season after a decent pre-season campaign saw them win three and lose one of four League Cup contests.

Having been shocked by a 3-2 defeat at Alloa, Craig Levein's side bounced back impressively with a 5-1 rout of East Fife last weekend. That victory secured top spot in Group F, and with it, a place in the round of sixteen.

Expected to be involved in the relegation dogfight, St Johnstone finished last season in 10th spot, above the relegation-playoff spot on goal difference only.

St. Johnstone Team News

Craig Levein has a couple of players unavailable for the Saints first Premiership game of the season. Summer signing Uche Ikpeazu is ruled out following knee surgery, while Ross Sinclair is a long-term absentee with a fractured elbow.

Aberdeen Form

Aberdeen make the short trip to Perth in buoyant mood after an excellent pre-season under the charge of new boss Jimmy Thelin. The former Elfsborg head coach guided his new side to four successive League Cup victories in the past month.

Free-flowing in attack, the Dons bagged an impressive 15 goals in comfortable wins against Queen of the South, East Kilbride, Airdrie and Dumbarton.

On the road, the Dons managed to avoid defeat in their final four away Premiership games of last season's campaign (W2, D2).

Aberdeen Team News

Head coach Thelin has a few injury headaches to deal with this weekend. Leighton Clarkson has been ruled out for two months with a shoulder injury, joining fellow midfielder Dante Polvara in the Dons treatment room.

Junior Hoilett also misses out with a hamstring complaint.

Verdict

The Dons have a good record in Perth, and I expect them to maintain winning form at McDiarmid Park.

An away win is my only choice for Monday's Premiership matchup.
